What is the course about?
Are you interested in working in the exciting hair and media make-up sector? Do you want to do something practical and hands on? This qualification is designed to give you a taste of this growing industry and will allow you to take part in stimulating experiences that provide a springboard to a career in the media make-up sector. If you are determined to pursue a career in make-up for media, this course provides you with the opportunity to further develop your knowledge and skills and to learn new skills such as airbrushing, camouflage make-up, and special effects for TV/film and media.

Learning on your course will take place in our state-of-the-art front-facing salon, The Academy, which has fully equipped professional hairdressing salons and media make-up studios. Being immersed in the salon environment and working on real paying clients will give the opportunity to put your newly developed skills to the test and receive live, honest critique. The open salon practical sessions will give you the opportunity to demonstrate your professionalism and develop a range of techniques for a variety of clients.
What will I learn?
This hands-on, work-based course will provide you with the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to progress within the industry. You will hone your skills in the media make-up sector and learn how present a professional image in a studio. You will also develop skills and knowledge within client consultation and care, special effects make-up, style and fit postiche, fashion and photographic make-up, airbrush make-up, camouflage make-up, applying prosthetics, style and dressing hair and creative hairdressing design.
What will the course lead on to?
After successfully completing this course, you will have the skills and knowledge needed to progress on to our Advanced Theatrical & Media Make-up course. You will also be in a position to offer mobile make-up treatments or begin work within a salon or studio environment.
Are there any links with industry and university?
In order to enhance your learning and knowledge of the wider sector, you will have the opportunity to hear from guest speakers throughout your course, who will come in and talk about their specialist area or their working environment. Guest speakers have included a range of employers and manufacturers such as Kaeso and Paul Mitchell, as well as apprentices who have progressed with their career and opened their own businesses. Our links with product companies will also provide you with a trade card, allowing you to build on your product repertoire for home use to build up your skills. We also have strong links with Steiner, a connection which will open your eyes to the exciting opportunity of working on cruise ships whilst travelling the world.
We will also support you in securing a two-week work placement in a relevant vocational setting, enabling you to gain a taste of a real-life working environment. This could even be your opportunity to impress and secure a part-time job or apprenticeship!
What support is available?
You will be allocated a progress coach who will provide you with support to help you succeed on your study programme and progress on to your chosen career or progression path. We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed. Additionally, eligible students can access a wide range of finance and funding support to help them during their time at college.

What are the entry requirements?
You will need to have successfully completed a level 2 course in a relevant subject.
If you have a level 2 qualification and have not already achieved a grade 4 in your GCSE English and/or maths, you will be required to work towards GCSE in English and /or maths as part of your study programme.
