What is the course about?
This two-year course will equip you with the underpinning knowledge and basic skills needed to work across a wide range of areas within the construction industry. You could progress on to the following career options/pathways:
- Surveyor
- Architect
- Project manager
- Contracts manager
- Site manager
- Quantity surveyor
- Foreman.
Why should I choose the course?
Throughout this course you will develop key skills in design, analysis, and evaluation as well as studying topics including surveying, setting out, estimating, construction design and health and safety.
What will I learn?
This varied course covers a wide range of modules which will provide you with the necessary skills and knowledge to secure a high-level career in the field of construction. You will begin the course by studying construction design, construction principles, tendering and estimating, construction technology, and health and safety in construction. When progressing on to your second year, you will undertake more complex modules including surveying, graphical detailing, building regulations and control, building information modelling, and management of a construction project. You will also have the opportunity to take part in hands-on work experience in a construction setting, providing you with valuable practical skills and preparing you for the workplace.
What will the course lead on to?
Upon completion, you could progress on to our HNC Construction and the Built Environment to develop your skills further. Alternatively, you may wish to pursue a higher apprenticeship and earn while you learn. For example, our Level 4 Construction Site Supervisor apprenticeship would be a suitable progression route. You could also head to university to study a related degree, or go straight into employment.
Are there any links with industry and university?
Typical student destinations include progression on to universities including the University of Salford and Liverpool John Moores University to study degrees in subjects such as quantity surveying and construction management.
What support is available?
You will be allocated a progress coach who will provide you with support to help you succeed on your study programme and progress on to your chosen career or progression path. We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed. Additionally, eligible students can access a wide range of finance and funding support to help them during their time at college.

What are the entry requirements?
You will need a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English and/or maths, or you will have needed to have successfully completed a related level 2 course. If you have not already achieved a grade 4 in your GCSE English/maths and you wish to study at level 3, you will be required to work towards achieving GCSE English/maths as part of your qualification.
Are there any additional costs associated with the course?
There may be some additional costs associated with this course, as you will be expected to purchase your own personal protective equipment (PPE) including safety footwear. You will be provided with further details upon application.
