HND Creative Media : Film

Within the HND year you will be advancing your skills and knowledge in a wide range of topics such as multi camera production, documentary production, and collaborative projects, in order to develop the skills needed to become a media professional. Upon successful completion, you can progress on to university to complete a top-up course. Creativity, innovation, and imagination will be encouraged throughout the course.

The programme can be studied full time over one year (attending two days per week on campus) or part time over two years (attending one day per week on campus).

You will develop and perfect your skills in film production through a range of pre-production, production, and postproduction roles including scriptwriting, editing, directing, production management, and camerawork.

The HND consists of the following units:

• Unit 36: Collaborative project
• Unit 37: Professional practice
• Unit 56: Documentary
• Unit 65: Promotion and marketing
• Unit 68: Narrative
• Unit 88: Advanced editing.

Please note that modules listed are indicative and may be subject to change. We do not guarantee that a non-mandatory unit will always run in any given academic year as options may be dependent on student numbers, sector requirements, and staff expertise.

Students on this HND course will have the opportunity to progress on to university to complete a top up to a BA hons degree or enter employment within the media industry.

Visiting professionals from the media industry may deliver talks and guest workshops throughout the course. Working practices and production methods are in line with industry and this will be articulated throughout the programme.

You will be encouraged to make your own links within the media industry and attend regular conventions, screenings or exhibitions in order to broaden your understanding of film conventions and professional practice. All learners will have opportunities to exhibit their work throughout the year in order to aid you in your professional practice.

You must have the following:

• A HNC in Creative Media, as the HND one year programme is a direct follow on from the HNC.

AND

• A* to C grade and/or 9 to 4 in GCSE English (language or literature)
• A* to C grade and/or 9 to 4 in GCSE maths is also recommended.

Non-native English speakers who have not undertaken their final two years of schooling in English need to demonstrate capability in English at a standard equivalent to the levels identified below. This is necessary before being recruited to the programme, as the programme is both taught and assessed in English:

• Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) level B2
• IELTS 5.5; reading and writing must be 5.5.

All HNC/HND programmes require the completion of a personal statement and curriculum-set task prior to an admissions interview being offered. Further information on this will be provided to you upon receipt of your application. You will also be required to provide a reference from one of the following options:

• A previous course leader/teacher (if progressing from a recently attended further or higher education course)
• A recent or current employer
• An appropriate professional who can provide a character reference (if you have not been in recent education or employment).

Professional industry standard postproduction software is provided, along with high standard filming equipment. The programme leader will make you aware of any additional requirements during induction and at the beginning of each new project, such as books that you may wish to purchase. Some students opt to purchase their own laptops and software in order to aid studies, however this is not mandatory. You will also be required to pay for trips plus photocopying and printing costs, dependent on personal requirements.
