Warrington & Vale Royal College’s DFN Supported Internship Students Secure Full-Time Employment

Warrington & Vale Royal College is delighted to announce the achievements of its Supported Internship cohort, many of whom have secured employment through their partnerships with DFN Project Search. The college’s Supported Internship programme combines real work experience with training in employability and independent living skills, all within an employment setting. This approach helps young people successfully transition into productive adult lives.

The college’s dedicated Supported Internship Co-ordinators have worked tirelessly with these successful interns, providing them with work placements throughout the year to develop their communication, teamwork, and interview skills. These efforts have led to the select interns securing full-time employment, and the college is proud to spotlight their individual success.

Lee Smith joined the college’s Supported Internship programme as a shy, quiet young man, anxious to meet new people and unsure about his future career. Since starting his supported internship at Warrington & Halton Hospital NHS Trust as a domestic assistant, Lee has settled into his role and developed excellent relationships with the staff. The college’s Supported Internship Co-ordinator, Leoni McHugh, commented: “Lee became a well-recognised and respected member of his team, and his work ethic was commended by management. Through his hard work and dedication, he secured a full-time role within the NHS, with the goal of becoming a porter at the hospital. It has been an honour to see Lee grow and develop into the confident young man he is today.”

Amy Benyon joined the Supported Internship programme unsure and uncertain about her future career options, but she knew she wanted a busy and active job. After completing various placements, Amy realised she really enjoyed cleaning and having the responsibility of her own task list. So, when a cleaning role became available at Warrington & Vale Royal College, Amy was keen to apply. After impressing in her interview and being employed in the role, Amy has gone from strength to strength! Lynne, Amy’s manager at the college, has commended her work ethic and exceptional knowledge of the key skills needed for her role. Amy is thrilled to have secured this role, and it’s been a joy for the Supported Internship Co-ordinators to see her so happy.

Megan O’Brien, who was recently offered a position as a food court attendant at Warrington Market, joined the Supported Internship programme to explore physical roles where she could stay busy on her feet and work as part of a team. She thrived in these circumstances and very quickly became an asset to all those she worked with. Leoni, Supported Internship Co-ordinator, said: “Megan’s confidence and self-esteem grew week on week, and she became extremely independent, working hard every single day, and viewing work as a privilege rather than a chore. She is over the moon to be working in a busy and social environment, and her progress has been a credit to her dedication. We wish her every success for her future.”

Everyone at Warrington & Vale Royal College is incredibly proud of all of this year’s Supported Internship students, and congratulates all those who have now secured employment and are learning new things every day. The college is still accepting applications for the coming year’s Supported Internship programme, starting in September 2024.
