Warrington & Vale Royal College teams up with GXO City Plumbing to support young people into work

Warrington & Vale Royal College is delighted to be working in partnership with GXO City Plumbing and DFN Project Search to launch an exciting non-EHCP Supported Internship pilot, offering young people with SEND a unique and practical route into employment.

This one-year programme is part of a national pilot taking place across six sites in England, designed to show how the successful Supported Internship model works just as well for young people without an active Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). With just 8-10 places available, this is a rare opportunity to gain work experience, develop confidence, and move closer to paid employment.

Unlike classroom-based study or simulated environments, interns will be fully immersed in a professional workplace from day one. Based at GXO City Plumbing in Warrington, interns will work five days a week and be supported with a dedicated on-site base room and personalised support from a Job Coach and mentor.

The internship is designed to be hands-on, varied, and career focused. Interns will complete three work rotations across different areas of the business, which may include Hospitality and Catering, Health and Science, Business and Administration, Engineering Maintenance, and Warehouse and Delivery. Skills gained may include preparing and serving food, supporting customer service teams, handling stock, using basic tools and equipment, following workplace health and safety policies, and more.

Alongside these work placements, interns will attend college-taught sessions focused on maths, communication, and digital skills – helping them build the confidence and independence needed for sustained employment.

GXO City Plumbing is strongly committed to inclusion and ensuring interns feel like valued members of the workforce. Interns will receive all required uniform and equipment, access to employee benefits such as free on-site gym, and a bursary to support with associated costs (subject to confirmation).

The pilot programme is open to young people who are aged 18-24 by 13th September 2026, who do not have an EHCP but do identify as having SEND. This may include those receiving SEN support, who self-identify as having additional needs, or who have a ceased EHCP. It is not suitable for those whose primary need is social, emotional, or mental health.

If you’re interested in this opportunity, please attend the Interest Day on Monday 18th May, at 2.00pm - 3.00pm or 6.00pm - 7.00pm, at GXO City Plumbing. With limited places available, this opportunity is not to be missed.
