Warrington & Vale Royal College Celebrates Local Artistic Talent at Young Artist of the Year 2026

Warrington and Vale Royal College is proud to celebrate another successful year of its Young Artist of the Year competition, which showcases the incredible creativity of local young people across the Cheshire region.

Warrington and Vale Royal College is proud to celebrate another successful year of its Young Artist of the Year competition, which showcases the incredible creativity of local young people across the Cheshire region.

This year’s competition received more than 30 entries from nine local high schools, with Year 10 and Year 11 pupils presenting an inspiring range of artwork at last week’s exhibition, housed at the college’s Warrington campus. The standard of submissions left judges and guests impressed, highlighting the exceptional talent emerging from the region.

The competition featured two main awards: Young Creative Artist of the Year and Student Favourite of the Year, with winners recognised for their originality, skill and creative vision.

Prizes reflected the outstanding quality of work on display. The winner of the Young Creative Artist of the Year Award received a professional artist’s kit sponsored by Abacus Creative Resources, while the winner of the Student Favourite Award received a high street gift voucher.

Laura Perez Higuera Young artist 2026

Laura Perez Higuera, a Sandymoor Ormiston Academy pupil and this year’s Young Creative Artist, impressed judges with a striking large‑scale piece described as brave and visually impactful. Using acrylic paint, she created an image of a child surrounded by expressive and vibrant drawings. In her artist statement, she described:
“Here, I painted a picture in acrylic on canvas to reflect how the world once felt so vibrant and full of possibility, yet how with age, that brightness often fades as we lose touch with our imagination. I added childlike drawings throughout the piece to embrace imperfection and reconnect with the uninhibited creativity we naturally had when we were young.”

Katrina Lam, a pupil from Sir Thomas Boteler C of E High School, won the Student Favourite Award following an incredibly close contest in which Warrington and Vale Royal College Level 2 and Level 3 Art and Design students anonymously voted for their favourite piece. Katrina used a diptych format to create a dramatic composition that captured the attention of fellow students. Her artist statement explained:
“This diptych shows tension through separation and connection. When the canvases are apart, the boat appears calm under the sunset and distant clouds. Once combined, the composition becomes more dramatic as the wave moves closer, creating a stronger sense of danger and movement. The contrast between the warm light and the turbulent sea emphasises the fragile moment before impact, increasing the visual tension immediately.”

After the award presentation, guests were given a tour of the college’s Advanced Creative and Digital Skills (ACDS) Academy, where they viewed the state-of-the-art facilities and workshops available to students studying Art and Design, as well as other courses such as Graphic Design, Fashion Promotion and Styling, Acting and Musical Theatre, and Creative and Digital Media, to name just a few. The college is still accepting applications for these courses, so it was a great opportunity to showcase these impressive facilities and allow visitors to see what the college has to offer.

Kelly Broughton, Curriculum Manager for Art and Design, said: “There was a great variety of work, and it was fantastic to see students tackling a wide range of media and scales. Many of the pieces also had thoughtful meaning behind them. We wish all entrants the very best as they approach their GCSE exams.”

Ben Brady, Director of Curriculum and Quality at Warrington and Vale Royal College, said: “The exceptional standard of this year’s entries has left me speechless. The talent on display has been extraordinary, and it is truly inspiring to see the next generation of artists showcasing their creativity. Based on what we have seen, there is no doubt that these students will go on to achieve remarkable success.”

Warrington and Vale Royal College extends its warmest congratulations to all participants and looks forward to continuing to support the next generation of creative talent as they grow and thrive.
