What is the apprenticeship about?

Engineering technicians engage in complex, highly skilled work, and can apply their skills to a wide range of engineering and manufacturing businesses.

Technical support technicians work as part of a team to provide technical support and expertise for all areas of the engineering and manufacturing function, including engineering drawing, quality control, computer control programming, operational technical support, engineering software development, product development, and innovation.

The requirements of this apprenticeship are designed to help you reach your full potential and become a competent engineering technician. When qualified, you will be able to work with minimum supervision, taking responsibility for the quality, accuracy, and timely delivery of the work you undertake. You will be proactive in finding solutions to problems and identifying areas for improving the business.

Why should I choose this apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships equip you with relevant skills and allow you to gain great work experience whilst earning a wage. As an apprentice engineering technician, you will gain the key skills, knowledge, and behaviours required to undertake a technical support role. During your course you will attend focussed tutorial sessions at college as well as gaining valuable industry experience with your employer.

What will I learn?

During this course you will initially learn a variety of foundation skills and knowledge in a workshop environment. These include electrical, mechanical, using lathes for turning operations, preparing and using milling machines, and conducting business improvement techniques.

You will then move on to the advanced stage where you will study a level 3 technical knowledge certificate including the following units:

  • Mathematics for engineering technicians
  • Electrical principles
  • Mechanical principles
  • Selecting and using programmable controllers
  • Further mathematics.

Electrical principles and mechanical principles in these areas will enable you to progress to higher education in the future.

You will be assigned an apprentice coach who, alongside your employer, will guide you through the apprenticeship programme and assist you in studying a work-based learning qualification to develop your skills and knowledge in the workplace. The qualification can be tailored to suit apprentice and employer requirements. The typical qualifications you will study include:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence)
  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Development Competence) – Technical Support
  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge.

Upon completion of the on-programme qualifications, you will undertake an end-point assessment (EPA) to assess your skills, knowledge, and behaviours. You must successfully complete the EPA in order to achieve the apprenticeship standard and have access to professional engineering recognition.

How is the apprenticeship delivered?

In the first year of your apprenticeship you will typically study at college two days per week, while in your second and third years you will spend one day per week at college.

You will normally work around 30 hours per week, and no more than 40 hours if you are under 18. This includes any training time at college (off-the-job) as well as the on-the-job training you will complete with your employer.

What will the apprenticeship lead on to?

Upon completion of this course, you could progress on to a level 4 engineering apprenticeship to further your skills and knowledge.

What support is available?

You will be allocated a designated apprenticeship coach to guide you through your apprenticeship. We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed.
