What is the course about?

The Level 2 Property Maintenance Operative covers a broad range of practical activities conducting the general day-to-day maintenance required to keep a range of properties in a good state of repair. Property maintenance operatives conduct routine maintenance tasks, and minor planned and responsive repair works, using a broad range of fundamental trade skills including carpentry, joinery, plumbing, plastering, brick and block work, external works and associated finishing trades including tiling, painting, and decorating.

Why should I choose the course?

This Apprenticeship is for individuals who are looking begin a career in property maintenance or upskill in the current employment. The qualification allows the individual to complete basic repairs and maintain properties using a wide range of basic trade skills.

What will I learn?

Property Operatives use a wide variety of hand and power tools, materials, components, fixtures and fittings, ensuring work that is carried out is compliant with health and safety requirements, and meets building safety regulations and legislation. This requires them to know and understand the key principles of buildings and their construction, the range of building services that support a buildings operation, including electrical, plumbing, plant, safety systems and equipment, the techniques, and processes to prevent damage. Operatives are also keenly aware of the limits of their own competence, and will respond appropriately to, and report faults and defects.

Property maintenance operatives are required to support in the optimisation of building performance and minimisation of environmental impact; operatives now need to record and report building information digitally, and consider sustainability and environmental choices, such as the use, recycling, and disposal of materials and components, in order to achieve net-zero carbon emissions.

How is the apprenticeship delivered?

The Property Maintenance Operative apprenticeship is typically completed over a 24-month practical period with a 6-month End Point Assessment period. However, this may be subject to change depending on any prior knowledge, skills or behaviors you currently have.

Delivered via a day release method, in which learners will attend college one day per week with the remaining four days completed in the workplace. During their practical period apprentices will complete a variety of knowledge-based sessions alongside a carousel of practical skills activities, developing the knowledge, skills and behaviors to conduct minor repairs and responsive maintenance to a wide range of properties.

What will the course lead on to?

Upon achievement, learners may choose to continue to further their studies and undertake a specific construction related apprenticeship standard in a specific occupational specialism. For example, upon completion an individual could undertake a further level 3 apprenticeship in Plumbing and Heating, Carpentry & Joinery, Bricklaying or Electrical Installation.

What support is available?

You will be allocated a designated tutor to guide you through your apprenticeship. We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed.
