What is the course about?

You will learn about the basic principles of computer programming to understand how programming works. You will develop graphic-based programming skills to design and develop your own computer program.

Why should I choose the course?

This 6-week accredited course is designed to give you an introduction and starting point in computer programming. The course outlines the principles behind programming and will develop further into designing a computer program, implementing it, testing it and review it. The course covers the principles of programming and the planning and documentation required. This last element is useful for anyone planning a new career as a computer programmer or software developer. All programming will be within a graphic based programming package so no real code is needed to produce a working product; this is what makes this introduction course easy to complete. The course assessment it portfolio-based consisting of a combination of written, planning and practical tasks.

On completion, you’ll receive an industry-recognised Level 1 accreditation and be perfectly placed to enrol on a Level 2 programming course or help you move into employment in the digital world.

There are no prior qualification or prior skills, knowledge or understanding requirements for these qualifications.

What will I learn?

The course consists to 4 main learning outcomes:

  • Know the basic principles of programming.
  • Be able to design a simple computer program in response to a client brief.
  • Be able to develop the program using a graphic-based programming language.
  • Be able to test, document and review the program.

What will the course lead on to?

This course prepares you for progression across a wide range of courses including:

  • L2 Award in Computer Programming
  • L3 Certificate in Computer Programming

Are there any links with industry and university?

To inform the curriculum design the lecturers have strong working relationships with a creative and digital steering group making sure that course content is relevant and current.

What support is available?

We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed. Additionally, eligible students can access a wide range of finance and funding support to help them during their time at college.

There are no specific entry requirements but you must be computer literate and have a good level of English.
