What is the course about?
This course is aimed at adult students (19+) who have a keen interest in glass and wish to progress and explore ideas within a range of glass work. This is a beginner’s course and will introduce you to knowledge and skills of leaded stained glass, copper foiling and kiln formed glass. It is ideal for anyone just starting out and wanting to learn the basics.
Why should I choose the course?
The aim of this course is to introduce you to the skills, knowledge, and behaviours required to be successful when working with glass. The course will prepare you for the next stage of your journey, whether this is further education or developing your own creative area of self-employment within the creative industries.
What will I learn?
As part of the course, you will explore a variety of glass techniques and processes that will include, leaded stained glass, copper foiling and kiln fusing. You will develop practical skills and explore other artists’ work and art movements in order to inspire your own work. You will be assessed through practical work, sketchbook work, and written evaluation.
What will the course lead on to?
Following successful completion of the course you can progress onto a level 2 art and design-based course such as the Level 2 Certificate in Glasswork.
Are there any links with industry and university?
Students may benefit from guest lectures from visiting artists and craftspeople who can deliver specialist workshops and talk about working as a freelance artist. Techniques and equipment used will be closely aligned to craft industry working practices in order to fully prepare you for developing as a glass artist. You may have the opportunity to take part in trips or offsite activities to gather inspiration for your own work. You will also have the opportunity to exhibit your work to your peers throughout the course to showcase the skills you have developed.

We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed. Additionally, eligible students can access a wide range of finance and funding support to help them during their time at college.

The course is delivered by highly experienced teachers who have a wealth of industry experience to share. You will have access to specialist studios and excellent facilities including electric kilns, enamelling kiln, glass kiln, and sand blasting equipment. There is a selection of art books in the studio and e-resources to assist you with your studies.
What are the entry requirements?
No formal qualifications are required, however a keen interest and ability in art and design is essential.
Are there any additional costs associated with the course?
Any trips will be in addition to the course fees. Students will also be required to purchase a sketchbook for the course, we recommend hard backed sketchbooks at A3 or A4 with good quality paper. CA note pad for documenting demonstrations and technical information is also required.
