What is the course about?

You will learn about the basic principles of computer programming to understand how programming works. You will develop graphic-based programming skills to design and develop your own computer program.

Why should I choose the course?

This 6-week course is designed to give you an introduction and starting point in computer programming.

The course outlines the principles behind programming and will cover the developmental life cycle of; the designing, implementing, testing and reviewing of a computer program.

The course covers the principles of programming and the planning and documentation required. This last element is useful for anyone planning a new career as a computer programmer or software developer.

All programming will be within a graphic based programming package so no real code is needed to produce a working product; this is what makes this introduction course easy to complete.

The course will consist of a combination of written and practical tasks, helping to deepen your skills and knowledge in computer programming.

On completion, you will be perfectly placed to enrol on a Level 2 programming course or help you move into employment in the digital world.

There are no prior qualification or prior skills, knowledge or understanding requirements for these qualifications.

What will I learn?

The course consists to 4 main learning outcomes:

1. Know the basic principles of programming.

2. Be able to design a simple computer program in response to a client brief.

3. Be able to develop the program using a graphic-based programming language.

4. Be able to test, document and review the program.

What will the course lead on to?

This course prepares you for progression across a wide range of courses including:

  • L2 Award in Computer Programming
  • L3 Certificate in Computer Programming

Are there any links with industry and university?

The college works with employers such as ABB Ltd, Draw and Code, Apple, 10:10 Games and Vizbox. IT department also benefits from visiting speakers from local organisations and employers throughout the year.

What support is available?

The teacher will provide a blend of whole class, small group and 1-1 support in class. There won’t be any additional learning support in class beyond this.

The course is based within our brand new Advanced Creative and Digital Skills Academy, providing you with access to all of the latest digital technologies. We have highly experienced staff to support you to develop the essential digital skills so that you can flourish in future progression opportunities.

Although there are no exams, you will be expected to create documents and programmes that develop your skills and understanding. Course materials will be available online so that the students may complete tasks outside of the classroom.

What are the entry requirements?

This is a taster course and no prior programming knowledge is needed, however, basic computing skills will be required.
