What is the course about?
This short, introductory course provides you with an opportunity to gain a range of basic skills and techniques before progressing on to the next steps course to develop your skills further.
Why should I choose the course?
This beginner’s course is ideal for those with an interest in learning the skills and techniques required to produce their own hand built small ceramics.
What will I learn?
During the course you will learn with demonstrations and make small items using hand-built techniques including:
· Preparing clay
· A range of hand build techniques, coil, and slab building
· Using templates and plaster moulds for coil made items
· Design your own template
· Glazing and finishing techniques including blue, green, and white tin stone.
The course is held in the college’s excellent art facilities, which include electric wheels, kilns, and a glaze room.
All materials are provided.
Note: Only items produced at the college during the course will be fired in the kilns.

What will the course lead on to?
After completing the short ceramics courses, you may wish to study one of our accredited courses to take your skills to the next level. Possible courses you may wish to progress on to include Level 1 Creative Crafts (Ceramics) and Level 2 Creative Crafts (Ceramics).

What are the entry requirements?
You must be aged over 19, have an interest in the subject area, and be willing to partake in classroom activities and discussions as well as to self-assess your weekly progress using an individual learning plan at the end of each session.
Are there any additional costs associated with the course?
Clay and glazes and use of kiln are included in the course fee. Your tutor will advise if you are required to purchase any items to enhance your work.
Please bring an apron, hand towel for drying your hands, and paper towels.
Please wear suitable shoes/boots-open toed shoes are not permitted.
