What is the course about?

The qualification prepares learners for employment in the Engineering sector or further study at university. Learners who are already employed in the Engineering sector will be able to study for a qualification that will support their career progression.

The programme can be studied full time in 1 year or part time over 2 years.

What will I learn?

The HND consists of the following units:

Mandatory modules:

  • Research Project
  • Professional Engineering Management
  • Further Mathematics
  • Lean Manufacturing

Optional modules:

  • Industrial Power, Electronics and Storage
  • Further Electrical, Electronic and Digital Principle
  • Industrial Systems

Optional modules listed are indicative and may be subject to change, we do not guarantee that an optional unit will always run in any given year as options may be dependent on student choice, numbers and staff expertise.

A range of assessment methods will be used, including reports and presentations, academic essays and work-related projects. Tutor assessments will be continual throughout the course. Formal assessments are moderated by the awarding body. There are no exams.

What will the course lead on to?

You could progress onto a top-up degree, or enter into employment as an engineer/technician in a wide variety of industries.
If already employed the qualification may open career development opportunities.

Are there any links with industry and university?

We have close links with a number of employers and organisations who share their own industry experience with students and work with us to deliver workshops and presentations. These employer relationships have been developed over a number of years by our staff to ensure that the information and knowledge shared with students is directly relevant to their chosen course of study.

What are the entry requirements?

You will need to have completed;

  • An RQF L4 HNC in the same subject.

Non-native English speakers, who have not undertaken their final two years of schooling in English, need to demonstrate capability in English at a standard equivalent to the levels identified below, before being recruited to the programme where the programme is both taught and assessed in English.

  • Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) level B2
  • IELTS 5.5; Reading and Writing must be at 5.5

Are there any additional costs associated with the course?

Students will need to purchase TINA simulation package for this course at as estimated cost of £75.00. You should have a laptop/desktop to download any available free software.

Students will undertake an engineering project, cost ranges from £50 - £150 depending on student choice.

In previous years students have attended visits to engineering organisations, students will need to arrange their own transport and food for these visits.

The college provides all students with £3 print credit, any further printing will incur a cost.
