What is the course about?
The Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ): HTQ Healthcare Professions’ Support for England opens up an exciting world of opportunity, empowering you for the future. It’s ideal if you’re seeking a career in the healthcare sector. If you’re already working in the healthcare industry, you can use this to upskill or retrain, acquiring valuable experience and gaining vital new skills to support your career progression.
The course will develop your knowledge, skills and understanding of the healthcare industry.
This qualification was developed in close collaboration with experts from employers and professional bodies to ensure you gain the skills and knowledge you’ll need to succeed in the future. Your learning will be rooted in the real world so that you leave the course, work-ready with the professional skills and behaviours that employers need.
The course is a 2 year programme studied over 2 years attending college 2 days per week.

Why should I choose the course?
On completion you may be provided with the opportunity to progress on to a university degree within the healthcare sector or alternatively the course prepares you for direct employment in the health and social care, voluntary and charitable sectors. It will enable you to gain experience within the sector through completing mandatory placement hours and being observed within the work place. The course can also enable staff to upskill and gain a higher position within their current role.
You will have access to the Health and Social Care Academy simulation ward and independent living flat where you will have practical sessions to build on your skills.
What will I learn?
In the first year you will complete the following;
- Unit 1: Law, Policy and Ethical Practice (15 Credits)
- Unit 2: Demonstrating Professional Principles and Values in Health and Social Care Practices (30 Credits)
- Unit 3: Supporting the Individual Journey through Integrated Health and Social Care (15 Credits)
- Unit 4: Fundamentals of Evidence-Based Practice (15 Credits)
- Unit 5: Principles of Health Education (15 Credits)
- Unit 7: Effective Healthcare Practice using Maths (15 Credits)
- Unit 9: Applied Anatomy and Physiology (15 Credits)
In the second year you will study the following;
- Unit 8: Innovation and Improvement through Participatory Action Research (30 Credits)
- Unit 9: Reflective Approaches in Implementing Person-centred Practice (15 Credits)
- Unit 10: Planning Care in Practice (15 Credits)
- Unit 11: Meeting the Needs of Individuals with Long-term Health Conditions (15 Credits)
- Unit 12: Team and Individual Leadership: Mentoring and Coaching Others (15 Credits)
- Unit 13: End of Life Care Planning and Support (15 Credits)
- Unit 23: Nursing – Principles and Fundamentals of Practice (15 Credits)
- Unit 18: Supporting Team and Partnership Working across Health and Social Care Services (15 Credits)
You will be required to complete a minimum of 225 hours work placement or experience in a healthcare setting in year 1 and again in year 2.

What will the course lead on to?
On completion of the course, you may progress onto the following:
- Adult Nursing Degree
- Mental health nursing Degree
- Degree in Health and Social Care, Social Work, or many other health degree courses
- Direct employment in the health and social care sectors
What support is available?
All HE students receive termly 1:1 tutorials with their Programme Leader to support them with their progress on programme. Students also have access to an online tutorial programme which provides guidance on a wide range of topics such as mental health, managing finances, support for single parents and working online. In addition, students can access a programme of workshops throughout the year to support with topics such as study skills, academic writing and time management.
We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if it is required and a welfare team that are on hand to offer guidance, support and help, when needed. All HE students have access to a designated Progress Coach who can also provide welfare support.

What are the entry requirements?
You will typically have one of the following:
- A BTEC level 3 or other level 3 qualification in a related subject, minimum MPP or MM
- T Level with overall grade Pass
- A minimum of two A-Levels (A2) with one in a related subject at grade C or above
- Access to HE with relevant options
- Appropriate relevant work experience – mature students who have appropriate work experience in a related sector or role and/or have professional qualifications in a related industry are welcome to apply.
AND
- A* to C grade and/or 9 to 4 in GCSE English (language or literature)
- A* to C grade and/or 9 to 4 in GCSE Maths
Non-native English speakers who have not undertaken their final two years of schooling in English need to demonstrate capability in English at a standard equivalent to the levels identified below. This is necessary before being recruited to the programme, as the programme is both taught and assessed in English:
- Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) level B2
- IELTS 5.5; reading and writing must be 5.5.
All HNC/HND programmes require the completion of a personal statement prior to an admissions interview being offered. You will also be required to provide a reference from one of the following options:
- A previous course leader/teacher (if progressing from a recently attended further or higher education course)
- A recent or current employer
- An appropriate professional who can provide a character reference (if you have not been in recent education or employment).
Applicants must have experience working within the health and social care sector and must complete a minimum of 450 hours work placement or experience over the two year period.

The fee for the course is £5995 per academic year.

Are there any additional costs associated with the course?
The college provides all students with £3 print credit, any further printing will incur a cost.
All students require a DBS enhanced check prior to beginning the course, this can be related to the job role if already in a workplace.
