What is the course about?

This qualification is designed to prepare you for employment in the engineering sector or for further study at university. If you are already employed in the engineering sector, you will be able to study for a qualification that will support your career progression. The programme can be studied full time over one year (attending college two days per week) or part time over two years (attending one day per week).

Why should I choose the course?

The programme works closely with employers to deliver a current and industry relevant curriculum. A range of assessment methods will be used, including reports, presentations, academic essays, and work-related projects. Tutor assessments will be continual throughout the course. Formal assessments are moderated by the awarding body. There are no exams during this course. Various industry-based software packages and test equipment are used to enhance practical and employability skills.

What will I learn?

The HNC consists of the following units:

Mandatory:

  • Engineering design
  • Engineering maths
  • Engineering science
  • Managing a professional engineering project (Pearson-set)
  • Electrical and electronic principles.

Optional:

  • Digital principles
  • Automation, robotics, and programmable logic controllers
  • Electronic circuits and devices.

Please note that modules listed are indicative and may be subject to change. We do not guarantee that a non-mandatory unit will always run in any given academic year as options may be dependent on student numbers, sector requirements, and staff expertise.

What will the course lead on to?

After successfully completing this course, you can develop your skills further by progressing on to the college’s HND programme. The programme also supports entry into employment as an engineer/technician in a wide variety of industries and enables career development opportunities for those already employed in industry.

Are there any links with industry and university?

We have close links with a number of employers and organisations who share their own industry experience with students and work with the college to deliver workshops and presentations. These employer relationships have been developed over many years by our staff to ensure that the information and knowledge shared with students is directly relevant to their chosen course of study.
