National Apprenticeship Week 2026!

This week is National Apprenticeship Week, and at Warrington & Vale Royal College, we’re celebrating all week long!

We are championing National Apprenticeships Week by highlighting the successes of our own apprentices, sharing insights from apprentice employers, and raising awareness of the benefits of choosing this educational pathway.  To kick things off, we’re going back to basics to give you all the information you need about what an apprenticeship is, and how to get yourself one!

What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a course type in which an individual works part-time for an employer whilst also studying and working towards a nationally recognised qualification in their chosen sector.

Apprenticeships last between 1 and 5 years to complete depending on the level. Anyone can study an apprenticeship, with many adults choosing apprenticeships to retrain or upskill.

An apprentice becomes an employee at an organisation, earning a wage and holiday pay, and working alongside experienced staff.

In general, an apprentice will spend 20% of their working hours in training and study. The remaining 80% of working hours are spent at the organisation, gaining hands on experience.

Types of apprenticeships

Apprenticeships range from level 2 up to level 7 and specialise in a range of sectors, such as construction, business, accountancy, health, and science.

For those studying an apprenticeship straight from leaving school, they will complete a level 2 or level 3 apprenticeship. For those that have already completed a level 2/3 qualification or have finished college, they may progress onto a higher-level apprenticeship up to a level 6 or 7, which is called a degree or higher apprenticeship.

How to find an apprenticeship

There are many ways to source employers who have apprenticeship vacancies. One of the best places to find an apprenticeship is on the government website: gov.uk/apply-apprenticeship.

Users can filter the search results by location and sector to show relevant vacancies, with each vacancy detailing more about the apprenticeship qualification and role.

A prospective apprentice may also self-source their employer, either by work experience, reaching out to local employers, or speaking to friends and family with business connections.

Apprenticeships at Warrington & Vale Royal College

Warrington & Vale Royal College prides itself on being one of Warrington’s leading providers of apprenticeships. The apprenticeship offer at the college is substantial and ranges from accounting, bricklaying, customer services, early years, laboratory sciences, and motor vehicle.

In order to support individuals who are currently thinking about applying for an apprenticeship, the college is hosting a virtual Q&A session, Tuesday 10th February. During the session, held on Microsoft Teams, our dedicated Apprenticeships Team will be on hand from 4.00pm-5.00pm to talk all about the benefits and opportunities available, as well as answer any questions attendees may have about the process of becoming an apprentice.
