Meet the employer - Norkem Limited

Norkem Limited is a worldwide chemical distributor selling into many different sectors such as animal feed, agriculture, food, pharmaceutical and technical. The college works alongside Norkem to offer high quality Business Administration apprenticeships, providing students with an impressive skill set and a chance to progress within the company. We spoke to Emma Cadley, Logistics Manager & DGSA, to gain a valuable insight into how apprenticeships work within the company. Can you describe your job role? Within my role I am responsible for the safe movement of goods in line with the applicable legislations. I head a team of 8 people who arrange transport via road, sea, rail and air, handle HMRC customs import/export formalities along with the stock management within our third party contracted warehousing. What kind of apprenticeship does your organisation offer? Our apprenticeships are in administrative roles and the individuals are taken on with the view to them becoming permanent members of the company on completion. Can you describe what your apprentices learn/the experience they gain from their apprenticeship? When starting with us a training plan is drawn up and this is constantly reviewed and updated, giving the apprentice a good learning platform not only from the college work but hands on work experience. They develop great communication skills as they are not only dealing with colleagues from our other offices but also all our third-party contractors. They learn how to prioritise tasks and how to handle difficult situations when things go wrong in transport. We enjoy watching the apprentices flourish into competent and valued members of staff that grow in confidence month on month. The training and work experience they receive will last them a lifetime. How do you/your organisation support your apprentices? We provide ongoing on the job training together with external training courses where necessary particularly with regards the moving of dangerous goods by road, rail, sea and air. We invest time and money, as well as guiding and supporting them through their coursework, should that be necessary, to ensure they have all the right tools to become competent within their role. I am always on hand for a one-to-one chat to help in any way. At the end of each year we have a formal appraisal meeting to discuss and agree objectives for the coming 12 months so there is always continued growth for the individual. How do you view apprenticeships in general- do you think they benefit your organisation? We believe in giving young people a starting point for their career. Investing in them and their training needs has contributed in moving the business forward to become the success that it is today. What would you advise a student looking to secure an apprenticeship with your organisation? Norkem looks for intelligent, enthusiastic individuals keen to learn and able to demonstrate a great work ethic. You can find out more about Norkem here.
