After completing Year 11, students can choose a qualification that reflects their interests, learning style, and career goals. There are several main post-16 education routes, including A Levels, BTECs, T Levels, and apprenticeships, each offering a different balance of academic and practical learning.

At Warrington & Vale Royal College, we are proud to be one of the leading colleges in Cheshire for technical qualifications, supporting thousands of students each year to gain the skills and confidence needed to succeed in higher education or employment.

A Levels are traditional, academic qualifications that involve studying three or four subjects over two years. They are mainly assessed through written exams and coursework, making them ideal for students who enjoy classroom-based learning.

Technical courses (BTECs) are a popular alternative to A Levels, offering a more hands-on, practical approach to learning. These qualifications blend theory and practical skills, helping students gain the technical knowledge needed for a specific career or industry. Assessment is typically through coursework, projects, and assignments rather than just exams. Available from entry-level up to Level 3 (equivalent to A Levels), BTECs are perfect for students who already have a career goal or prefer a vocational route.

At Warrington & Vale Royal College, our BTEC students benefit from access to industry-standard facilities and expert tutors with real-world experience. Many of our students progress to university, apprenticeships, or employment in their chosen field, proving that BTECs open doors to a wide range of opportunities.

T Levels are an exciting new type of technical qualification after GCSEs, designed in collaboration with employers to reflect the skills needed in today’s industries. Equivalent to three A Levels, T Levels combine classroom learning with a minimum of 45 days of industry placement, providing students with valuable real-world experience.

This blend of academic study and on-the-job training helps students develop both theoretical understanding and practical confidence, which is ideal preparation for higher education or skilled employment. T Levels are available in growing fields such as health, engineering, science and construction, ensuring learners are ready for the future workforce.

For students who want to earn while they learn, an apprenticeship is a good choice. Apprentices work full-time for an employer while studying part-time at college to gain a nationally recognised qualification. This unique combination of workplace experience and classroom learning helps students develop the skills that employers value most.

Apprentices typically attend college one day per week on “day release” and are paid at least £7.55 per hour (correct as of October 2025). Many earn more, depending on their role and industry. Apprenticeships are available across a wide range of sectors and levels, from intermediate to degree level, offering genuine career progression.

If your child is interested in apprenticeships, visit wvr.ac.uk/apprenticeships to learn more about current opportunities and how our team can support their application.

At Warrington & Vale Royal College, we pride ourselves on being an inclusive and supportive environment where every student is treated as an individual and encouraged to reach their full potential. For young people who may need a little extra support or who are looking for an alternative route into a rewarding career, a Supported Internship could be the ideal next step.

Designed for students aged 17+ with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), these programmes combine classroom learning with meaningful work placements, supported by a dedicated Job Coach and Internship Coordinator. Students typically spend most of their time in the workplace, developing confidence, independence, and the practical skills needed to move successfully into employment.

Helping your child make decisions about life after GCSEs can feel daunting, but remember, you are not alone. At Warrington & Vale Royal College, we are committed to supporting parents and carers to understand all the available college courses after Year 11 and guide their children toward a pathway that matches their aspirations.
