Warrington & Vale Royal College's Games Design students competing for a cause

This June, our Games students will be taking on an exciting creative challenge with a meaningful purpose, as we launch a three-day Game Jam charity event starting on Monday 22nd June 2026. Bringing together students from across our courses, the event is designed not only to showcase their creativity and technical skills, but to make a real difference by raising money for the incredible charity SpecialEffect.

A Game Jam is an intense and highly collaborative experience where teams work against the clock to design and create a playable game in just three days. Teams can be made up of FE students and HE students, giving them the chance to combine their skills and bring an idea to life from scratch. The event will have a theme their games must adhere to, challenging them to think creatively while working under pressure in a fast-paced, studio-style environment.

What makes this event even more special is the cause behind it. All funds raised will go to SpecialEffect, a UK charity that transforms the lives of people with disabilities by creating innovative gaming setups and accessible technology. Their work ensures that everyone, regardless of physical ability, can experience the joy and inclusion that gaming brings. The Game Jam will not only be an excellent enrichment for our students, allowing them to develop their skills in a competitive environment, but it will also be powering an important cause.

Students will be contributing a £10 entry donation to take part, with all proceeds going directly to the charity. Alongside this, participants will be encouraged to seek sponsorship from friends and family, with staff also getting involved to help boost fundraising efforts. The aim is to raise as much as possible while giving students an unforgettable end-of-year experience that blends creativity, teamwork, and purpose.

To make things even more exciting, we are hoping to welcome industry professionals to judge the final projects, giving students valuable feedback and insight into the games industry. There will also be prizes for the winning team!
