Carpentry & joinery students complete meaningful project for St Oswald’s House

In a unique collaboration between Warrington & Vale Royal College and St Oswald’s House, Level 1 Carpentry & Joinery students recently had the chance to complete an exciting project involving the creation of custom fences and gates for ‘Duckingham Palace’, an enclosure for the ducks looked after by the residents of the care home. This project not only highlighted the students' technical expertise, but also provided them with an invaluable opportunity to contribute to the community, blending their craftsmanship with care.

For the project, students travelled to St Oswald’s House, a care home in Winwick. Students transformed an existing pergola into bespoke enclosure for the care home’s community of feathered friends, by fitting newly-constructed gates and fences. This not only provided a practical and meaningful contribution to the care home, but also transformed the space with a professional touch. The students even hand-delivered the ducks to their new home, adding a heart-warming moment to the day.

The residents of St Oswald’s House were thrilled to witness the student’s work first-hand, with many coming outside to watch as the gates and fences were expertly fitted. The students connected with the residents, and the day was a perfect example of how the skills that they are learning in the classroom can have a positive impact on the lives of others, as well as being an opportunity to develop other essential employability skills by working with clients directly.

Ria, a representative from St Oswald’s House, was impressed at the final results: “We are absolutely amazed by the results of this project and can't wait to offer more opportunities for the students to gain valuable industry experience. Their hard work and craftsmanship have truly impressed us, and we look forward to collaborating on future projects.”
