Careers Week brings valuable employer insights to students

Warrington & Vale Royal College’s most recent Careers Week, which took place from Monday 23rd to Friday 27th March, once again provided students with meaningful opportunities to meet employers and gain a clearer understanding of the range of careers available post college. Throughout the week, visitors from multiple sectors joined the college to share their expertise and offer valuable guidance to students exploring their next steps.

Monday

The week got off to an engaging start with sessions featuring representatives from UKLC, Lottie Holloway and Eva Campbell, who outlined the organisation’s international summer and year-round programmes, and highlighted the transferable skills students can develop through seasonal work. Lisa Scott from National Highways followed with an informative talk on the organisation’s responsibility for England’s major road network and the diverse careers involved in supporting public safety and infrastructure.

Representatives from the Park Royal Hotel, led by Elizabeth Evans, Operations Manager, provided an overview of career opportunities across hospitality, wellbeing, and hotel operations, illustrating the scale and variety of roles within its Warrington venue. In an exciting turn, Lewis Davey, British athlete who has won multiple medals for Great Britain, was also in attendance to talk about his experience training at the hotel.

Day one concluded with a two-part workshop from global company Serco. Sam Stirland and Kamal Riyani offered insight into career pathways across their public service operations and provided practical guidance on interview techniques, personal branding, and competency-based applications.

Tuesday

Tuesday brought a strong mix of employability and skills-focused sessions. Andrew Maddock from Balfour Beatty, a leading international infrastructure group, provided an overview of careers in construction and engineering, including current apprenticeship opportunities at level 3 and degree level. Elsewhere, Leon Smith from The British Army introduced students to the wide range of roles available, including apprenticeship pathways and opportunities within the reserves.

Furthermore, David Smith from Warrington Borough Council delivered guidance on building a professional LinkedIn profile, supporting students in researching potential employers and preparing for interviews. Employability support continued throughout the day with workshops from Job Centre Plus and Higher Horizons, covering CV writing, interview skills, labour marketing information, and wider career preparation, with sessions tailored to different curriculum areas. These were delivered by Allie Swindlehurst and Charlotte Hughes.

Wednesday

Wednesday continued the focus on employability with Matthew Kenyon from Morrisons PLC delivering additional sessions to support students with strengthening their job applications and understanding the expectations of employers. Bridgewater NHS Trust representative Sarah Power also offered a glimpse into the wide range of careers available within the service, spanning 350 roles. Students learned about local opportunities, apprenticeships, routes into their chosen sector, pay and benefits, and the recruitment process.

Thursday

Thursday’s sessions offered guidance on higher-level study and sector-specific career pathways. Louise Wylie from the University of Salford provided an overview of higher and degree apprenticeships alongside Higher Technical Qualifications, focusing on how to find opportunities, apply, and understand funding. Online, Lisa Hill from the Northwest Ambulance Service also highlighted current apprenticeship vacancies within the organisation.

Meanwhile, business and accounting students enjoyed a bespoke question and answer session delivered by Aimee Ruddy on behalf of Warrington Chamber of Commerce, while engineering students were introduced to exciting upcoming apprenticeship opportunities within Bonfiglioli from Loui Bovis, Managing Director.

Friday

The week concluded on Friday with an inspiring session from the Royal Air Force. Sgt Ben Bainbridge offered students a compelling insight into the breadth of roles within the RAF, highlighting the exciting apprenticeship and job opportunities currently available across military, engineering, paramedic, and motor vehicle maintenance roles.

Warrington & Vale Royal College extends a sincere thank you to each person mentioned who took time out of their busy schedule to support Careers Week. Every contribution made a genuine difference, offering students insight they wouldn’t gain from their studies alone, to help them feel more prepared for the important decisions ahead.

The college greatly values the ongoing support from its employer partners, whose willingness to share their time and experience continues to enrich the student’s understanding of the world of work.
