Level 3 Graphic Design student Local student designs logo for newly launched Warrington Family Hubs

Creative talent meets community impact as Level 3 Graphic Design & Illustration student, JJ Reid, sees his designs selected to front Warrington’s new Family Hubs. Commissioned through a live brief set by Warrington Borough Council for students at Warrington & Vale Royal College, JJ’s work will now help to shape the welcoming face of these transformed Children’s Centres.

Since September 2022, Warrington’s Children’s Centres have been changing into Family Hubs, which aim to bring together multiple organisations in a 'one stop shop', making it easier for families to access support they need. As part of the transformation project, Warrington Borough Council needed a new logo, and tasked graphic design students at Warrington & Vale Royal College with producing new branding.

Emma Whaley, General Manager of the Living Well Hub with Warrington Borough Council, was thrilled with the outcome of the live brief, saying: “JJ was part of a talented group of students who took part in a project to design the new Family Hub logo. The group received a briefing on the transformation and what matters most to families in Warrington. I was really impressed by how well the students grasped the requirements of the brief, and how creatively they responded."

“We took away twelve fantastic designs, which were then put to a vote by our staff and key stakeholders, and JJ’s stood out as the favourite design which encapsulated the inclusivity and welcoming environment we want to create at these facilities."

Graphic design tutor, Emma Dunne, praised JJ’s work and dedication to developing his industry-ready skills, saying: “This project has really helped JJ to gain confidence in his abilities and allowed him to show off how much he has learned since joining the college. It is opportunities like this that are invaluable for our students as they provide real industry experiences whilst developing both their design skills and their employability skills, by speaking with real clients and responding to their needs. We are all so proud of JJ. It was an absolute pleasure to celebrate in his success - what an achievement!"

In collaboration with local employers, students at Warrington & Vale Royal College regularly participate in live briefs, with the opportunity to work on real-world projects and gain valuable industry experience. These opportunities demonstrate the college’s commitment to being career-focused and well preparing its students for their future careers.
