What is the course about?
The course is suitable for those with a keen interest in computing and IT.
The course is delivered by expert tutors and industry specialists. The programme will develop your skills, knowledge, and understanding in a variety of topics, including; networking, cyber security, emerging technologies, legislation, IT in organisations, data, and digital environments.
In year 1 you will follow a core component consisting of two examinations and an employer set project.
You will receive a grade for the core component of A* to E or U.
In year 2 – you will specialise in network cabling; assessments for this will be project based.
You will receive a grade for your occupational specialism component of distinction, merit, pass, or ungraded.
When it comes to employment, you’ll have the knowledge and skills to go wherever your ambitions take you.

You will develop knowledge and understanding of concepts, theories and principles relevant to a wide range of computing and IT jobs that are emerging in the industry.
You will develop a wide range of practical application of skills, both within the classroom setting, and via an extended industry placement. You will be fully equipped for your next steps whether it is employment, an apprenticeship, or a higher education course.
You will learn in our state-of-the-art fully equipped workshops, which contain the latest industry relevant technology and equipment.
What will I learn?
Students will develop an understanding of:
- Components of a network and the protocols used, including virtual computing and cloud computing.
- Cyber security, including an understanding of penetration testing.
- Disaster planning and recovery for protecting digital security of an organisation.
- Project management and software development life cycle methodologies.
- Networking, including an understanding of application installation and configuration.
- Selecting and applying techniques and tools to support evaluation in a digital infrastructure context.
- The role of IT in an organisation.
- Current legislation and the implications for IT, including diversity and inclusion.
- Understanding data and how to present it effectively.
- Algorithms and computational thinking.
- Emerging technology and the implications for organisations.
- Testing techniques including tools that can be used.
In year two, students will learn about:
- The control techniques that can be introduced to help with risk mitigation. Students will explore disaster recovery plans and develop risk assessments whilst learning to configure and mange networks and devices.
- Different cable types, the impact these can have on a network, testing of cables and compliance with standards, legislation and regulations.
- The information supporting digital interaction and ways to ensure data sources are accurate, reliable and valid.
What will the course lead on to?
The course can lead on to a wide range of higher-level apprenticeships, degree courses, and employment in roles including network installation, IT technical support, IT security co-ordinator, cyber security, and data analyst. Salaries in computing are competitive with salaries reaching £60k for cyber security specialists.
Are there any links with industry and university?
The course includes a nine-week industry placement which is split across the two years.
Whilst we highly recommended you self-source your own industry placement, you will have the support of an industry placement officer to provide the extra help in finding relevant industry placements as required. Within the placement you will apply your classroom-based skills and knowledge within an industry environment, giving you the experience to better prepare you for future employment.

You will be allocated a progress coach who will provide you with support to help you succeed on your study programme and progress on to your chosen career or progression path. We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a welfare team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed. Additionally, eligible students can access a wide range of finance and funding support to help them during their time at college.

What are the entry requirements?
You will need a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English and maths, or you will have needed to have successfully completed a level 2 course and have GCSE English and maths at grade 4 or above.
Are there any additional costs associated with the course?
There may be additional costs for clothes that are associated with industry placements, and there may also be costs associated with trips and externally sourced workshops.
