What is the course about?
This course is an introduction to SQL (Structured Query language). SQL is a programming language designed to manage data stored in relation databases. SQL is a powerful and robust tool for extracting relevant and useful data from datasets, both large and small. This course will cover the basics of databases and the SQL commands used to manage them. The course consists of tutor lead sessions with plenty of opportunities to practice and implement what you have learnt.
Why should I choose the course?
SQL is used widely across web frameworks and data base applications, and understanding SQL allows you to handle structured data by accessing and manipulating databases. This course will give you the first steps in applying SQL to database management. The SQL programming language is versatile and is one of the simplest to learn due to its natural language structure. SQL is one of the most in demand programming languages available, and anyone that utilises modern relational databases will need to have an understanding in using SQL. SQL use is predominant across data driven industries. All large companies implement databases and so utilise SQL as a part of their data mining activities. The SQL language can be used across many different software platforms, and so learning the basics of SQL will give you the foundations for SQL usage across many systems.
What will I learn?
Throughout SQL 1, you will be learning the basics required to start your journey with SQL. This will include:
- What is SQL and what are databases?
- The basic structure of SQL Commands; including retrieving data; basic SQL table management methods; creating and changing tables and records
- Different data types
- Basic Boolean operators
- Essential key terminology
What will the course lead on to?
Completion of this course will allow you to progress onto the SQL 2 (intermediate) course as well as supporting your career within IT & Computing.

The Advanced Creative & Digital Skills Centre is proud to work with a wide range of local and national employers who will deliver industry-specific skills and knowledge during the course, offer learners the chance to take part in competitions or live briefs and often talent spot for their next employees.
