What is the course about?

This intensive two-day Solar PV Awareness Training course is designed to provide participants with a foundational understanding of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and their role in the transition to renewable energy. Aimed at individuals looking to broaden their knowledge of low-carbon technologies, the course offers a mix of theoretical insights and practical demonstrations to build awareness of how solar PV systems operate, where they can be applied, and the key considerations for installation and maintenance.

Through guided discussions and practical activities using a full-scale roofing rig fitted with working solar panels in our Green Technology Hub, students will gain an appreciation for health and safety practices, basic fault identification, and sustainable working practices. Emphasis will also be placed on developing behaviours such as environmental responsibility, curiosity about new technologies, and awareness of the evolving energy landscape. This course is ideal for those considering a career in renewable energy or seeking to expand their knowledge for personal or professional development.

Why should I choose the course?

The UK solar industry is experiencing rapid growth, with increasing demand for trained professionals to support the transition to renewable energy. By choosing our two-day Solar PV Awareness Training course, deliered in our state-of-the-art Green Technology Hub at Warrington & Vale Royal College, you’ll gain hands-on experience with real solar panels, battery storage systems, and EV charging units in a purpose-built training environment.

This short course provides a valuable first step into a fast-moving sector, helping you build essential knowledge and practical awareness to take advantage of new career opportunities in the expanding low-carbon energy workforce.

What will I learn?

The course provides a valuable introduction to key concepts such as solar energy principles, PV system components, energy conversion, and typical system layouts. Participants will explore topics including system efficiency, grid connection basics, environmental impact, and the regulatory context surrounding solar installations in the UK.

What will the course lead on to?

This short course offers a valuable introduction to the rapidly growing low-carbon and renewable energy sector, with a specific focus on solar photovoltaic (PV) technology. It’s ideal for anyone considering a career in renewable energy, including those who are:

  • Exploring entry routes into roles such as solar PV installer or low-carbon technician (depending on prior experience or qualifications)
  • Progressing into further technical training or accredited solar qualifications
  • Applying for relevant apprenticeships in the green energy or building services sectors
  • Laying the groundwork for a long-term career in sustainable technologies, helping drive the UK’s journey to net zero.

While this is a non-accredited awareness course, it supports wider employability by building understanding of industry expectations, promoting professional behaviours, and offering insight into real-world applications through hands-on training in our Green Technology Hub. By the end of the course, students will have developed core knowledge and awareness to take the next step in their green energy journey.

Are there any links with industry and university?

This course supports wider employability by encouraging key skills such as teamwork, communication, and professional conduct. Students will benefit from engaging discussions around career pathways in the solar and broader renewable energy sector. Warrington & Vale Royal College has strong links with employers across the construction and housing sectors who are actively seeking skilled workers in solar PV and low-carbon technologies.

By the end of the course, students will have a solid understanding of solar PV systems, along with the confidence and awareness needed to take the next step—whether that’s pursuing further training, securing new contracts, applying for an apprenticeship, or exploring roles in the low-carbon energy industry.
