What is the apprenticeship about?

Plumbing and domestic heating technicians plan, select, install, service, commission and maintain all aspects of plumbing and heating systems. They could work inside or outside a property, in domestic or commercial settings. This apprenticeship will ensure you learn how to carry out these tasks to a high standard and prepare you for employment in this sector. It is also important to develop customer service skills and always be tidy and respectful, as you will often be working in customers’ homes as well as on building sites.

Why should I choose this apprenticeship?

As a plumbing apprentice you will gain a valuable insight into how the construction industry works. Plumbing is a very lucrative career with great earning potential. As a qualified plumber, you will likely find yourself in high demand and have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of jobs. You will carry out your jobs to a high standard, giving you a sense of accomplishment after each task is completed.

What will I learn?

You will learn how to carry out the installation of plumbing and heating systems, which involves accurate measuring, marking, cutting, and bending and jointing metallic and non-metallic pipework. Appliances and equipment you may be working with include gas, oil and solid fuel boilers as well as pumps, heat emitters, bathroom furniture and controls. This equipment may form part of a cold water system, hot water system, central heating system, or above ground drainage and rainwater system.

Plumbing and heating technicians are also at the forefront of installing new environmental technologies like heat pumps, solar thermal systems, biomass boilers and water recycling systems. You will become familiar with all these exciting technologies throughout your apprenticeship.

During your apprenticeship you will develop the ability to be able to work independently or as part of a team. You will be able to use your skills and knowledge to ensure that the system and appliances are appropriately selected and correctly installed. You will also need to carry out your tasks in a safe, efficient, and economical manner.

How is the apprenticeship delivered?

The apprenticeship is delivered over 48 months, and you will be fully supported by the college every step of the way. During your apprenticeship you will attend college one day per week, with the other four days spent with your employer. As an apprentice you will be allocated a tutor and an assessor, who will come out to visit you onsite.

What will the apprenticeship lead on to?

The construction industry has a huge range of career opportunities. After becoming a qualified tradesperson, you could pursue a range of career paths, from site management to owning your own business. You may also wish to take your studies further and complete the HNC in Construction & the Built Environment.
