What is the course about?

Are you interested in pursuing an exciting career in social sciences? Even if you have not studied for some time, this social sciences course will help you to develop your academic skills and confidence, setting you on a path to study a social science-related or social work degree at university or other higher education courses at college.

Why should I choose the course?

The access to social sciences will provide you with the qualification necessary to progress on to university or further study in your chosen subject area. Progression opportunities could include psychology, criminology, counselling, social care and social work

What will I learn?

You will study a variety of modules such as:

  • Research project – psychology and criminology
  • Mental health and wellbeing
  • Safeguarding
  • Counselling and therapeutic skills
  • Law
  • Academic writing and study skills (which will take you through your university application and interviews, showing you how to research and how to give a presentation).

Please note units may be subject to change.

You will be assessed during the course as each unit is taught and completed. You will be assessed through a variety of methods such as essays, presentations, research projects, and exams. The course is delivered on a blended model, with most sessions being face to face and a small part delivered online.

What will the course lead on to?

Students who achieve this qualification generally go on to university to study degrees in subjects including social work, criminology, psychology, law, counselling, criminal justice and health and social care

Are there any links with industry and university?

Universities expect adults who apply for some vocational degrees to have previous relevant paid or voluntary experience. If you are looking to become a teacher or work in a school setting it is imperative that you have some classroom experience.

If you do not already have this experience, you will be required to organise relevant experience before you begin the course. If you require advice about which type of experience would help your university application, ask to speak to our Careers Advisor based in Learner Services.

What support is available?

We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed. Additionally, eligible students can access a wide range of finance and funding support to help them during their time at college.
