What is the course about?
This course will give you an insight into the fast-paced world of computing and how businesses use their IT facilities. It will enable you to build on your existing knowledge, develop and enhance your technical skills, and help you to embark upon a career in this ever-changing sector.
This qualification provides you with key knowledge such as the fundamentals of IT and how businesses use these facilities in their everyday operations. During this course you will be assessed via external assessments. You will use this qualification as a steppingstone into further study or possibly use what you have learnt in your future employment.

What will I learn?
The qualification will enable you to acquire a range of transferable skills and knowledge which is highly regarded. You will take the following extended units:
Unit 1 - Fundamentals of IT:
- Computer hardware
- Computer software
- Business IT systems
- Employability and communication skills used within an IT environment
- Ethical and operational issues and threats to computer systems.
Unit 2 - Global Information:
- Where information is held globally and how it is transmitted
- Understand the styles, classification, and the management of global information
- The use of global information and the benefits to individuals and organisations
- The legal and regulatory framework governing the storage and use of global information
- The process flow of information

What will the course lead on to?
Upon completion of the course, you may wish to progress on to the HNC and HND courses, possibly with a view to securing higher-level IT employment or progressing on to university.
This course can also equip you with the general skills needed for entry to employment in the sector or to enhance your present employment skills. There may also be the opportunity to progress on to the foundation diploma. See your tutor for further information.
Are there any links with industry and university?
On this course, you will have the opportunity to learn from guest speakers to give you a valuable industry insight. One such visitor is the Business Development Manager at Siemens.

There are no formal entry or prior learning requirements for this qualification, but it is ideal for students with a prior level 2 qualification in IT. It is also suitable for adults with previous IT experience who are looking to take the first step towards furthering their education or career without committing to a full-time course.

To accommodate the online element of the course, we would recommend that you have access to a home computer and an internet connection (such as broadband or 4G/5G mobile data)
You will be encouraged to purchase an external drive on which to save your work in order to enable you to work independently outside of college.
