What is the course about?
Are you interested in working in the exciting nail technology industry? Do you want to do something practical and hands on? This unique and innovative one-year course is suitable for anyone looking for a creative career in nails, whether you have no experience or some knowledge and basic skills in the industry.

There has never been a better time to enter the bustling nail industry. This industry is vibrant, dynamic, and fast paced, offering fantastic employment and training opportunities. The sector boasts a workforce of over 245,000 people working across 55,000 businesses comprising of hair, beauty and nail salons, barbers, and spas. HABIA states the industry size and turnover annually in this sector is £6.2 billion, employing nearly a quarter of a million people. As one of the biggest growing industries in Cheshire currently, there are plenty of opportunities to earn high wages.
Learning on your course will take place in our state-of-the-art salon, The Academy, which features fully equipped professional treatment room suites. Being immersed in this front-facing salon environment and working on real paying clients will give the opportunity to put your newly developed skills to the test and receive live, honest critique. The open salon practical sessions will give you the opportunity to demonstrate your professionalism and develop a range of skills to prepare for a variety of nail types and conditions.
What will I learn?
This hands-on, work-based course will provide you with the skills, knowledge and experience needed to progress within the nail industry. During your course, a key focus is building your basic skills, such as providing manicure and pedicure services, gel polish application, nail art, and enhancing nails using acrylic. You will also learn how to promote products and services to clients in the salon environment, ensuring you are ready to gain employment in a real salon or become self employed as a mobile therapist.
What will the course lead on to?
After successfully completing this course, you will have the skills and knowledge needed to progress onto the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Nail Services, which covers enhance and maintain nails using UV gel. liquid and powder and the nail wrap system. You will build on your existing nail art skills to create designs for your clients ensuring you are ready for industry. E-files are included within the level 3 for help with nail preparation and finish.
You will also be in a position to offer mobile nail treatments or begin work within a commercial salon environment.
Are there any links with industry and university?
In order to enhance your learning and knowledge of the wider sector, you will have the opportunity to hear from guest speakers throughout your course, who will come in and talk about their specialist area or their working environment. Guest speakers have included a range of employers and manufacturers such as OPI Nails, Kaeso, Environ, and Silhouette, as well as apprentices who have progressed with their career and opened their own businesses. Our links with product companies will also provide you with a trade card, allowing you to build on your product repertoire for home use to build up your skills. We also have strong links with Steiner, a connection which will open your eyes to the exciting opportunity of working in beauty therapy on cruise ships whilst travelling the world.
We will also support you in securing a two-week work placement in a relevant vocational setting, enabling you to gain a taste of a real-life working environment. This could even be your opportunity to impress and secure a part-time job or apprenticeship!
What support is available?
You will be allocated a progress coach who will provide you with support to help you succeed on your study programme and progress on to your chosen career or progression path. We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed.

What are the entry requirements?
You will need a minimum of two GCSEs grade 3 or above and GCSE English and/or maths at grade 4 or above, or successful completion of a level 1 course in a relevant subject.
If you have a level 1 qualification and have not already achieved a grade 4 in your GCSE English and/or maths, you will be required to work towards achieving this as part of your study programme.
Are there any additional costs associated with the course?
You will be expected to purchase a uniform and attend 100% of your course to ensure you develop the relevant skills to meet employer expectations and so that you can present professional standards from the very start of your course. There will be a kit list issued with nail products and equipment for use within your time on the course, which you will be required to purchase. Further details will be available on application.
Various trips are organised throughout the academic year relating to the beauty industry, which you will be required to pay a contribution towards.
There will be an opportunity to achieve additional awards to further build your skill set to fully prepare you for work in the industry.
