What is the course about?
If you are interested in pursuing a career in the ever-changing hairdressing industry, then the Hair Professional apprenticeship is the right course for you. This apprenticeship role is suitable for anyone with a genuine passion for hairdressing, and who is hardworking, able to use their own initiative and is good a communicating with a wide range of clientele.
This exciting course is delivered at the college’s Warrington campus and covers a range of topics related to the skills, knowledge and behaviours associated with the hairdressing industry.
As part of this course, you will be learning about client care, health and safety legislation, a range of current techniques for cutting, colouring, and styling, and the importance of advice and aftercare guidance.

This apprenticeship is suitable for anyone with a creative flair who wishes to develop their skills in the hairdressing sector. You will be based in the workplace and will deal with a variety of clients on a daily basis.
What will I learn?
During your course, you will spend time in the college’s onsite hair salon, completing a variety of mandatory modules as well as optional specialisms to work towards your qualification. These will include professionalism and values, behaviours and communication, safe working practices, and consultation techniques. As part of this course, you will be learning about client care and health and safety legislation, as well as developing a range of practical skills, like cutting, styling and finishing hair, colouring and lightening and shampooing and conditioning.
How is the apprenticeship delivered?
Whilst on your apprenticeship you will attend college one day per week during the academic year and spend the other four days in the workplace.
You will be assessed by a diverse range of assessment methods on this programme. Assessment will mainly take place via practical observations, questioning (closed book test paper), and witness testimonies completed by your manager/ mentor. Observations in the workplace will be carried out every three to four weeks, or more frequently if you require. To meet the health and safety requirements of the college you must wear full uniform in the academy salons as well as a full shoe. A full shoe also needs to be worn in the workplace for assessments to meet VTCT criteria and standards. You will need to take responsibility for your own progress and stay in contact with your assessor for regular work-based visits.
What will the course lead on to?
After completing the apprenticeship, you can progress onto a senior professional standard in hairdressing or maintain employment in a salon as a stylist.

You will be allocated a designated tutor to guide you through your apprenticeship. We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed.

What are the entry requirements?
Entry requirements for this apprenticeship programme are GCSE grades 9-4, or level 2 functional skills qualifications in English and maths. We will consider those who need to resit either their English or maths qualification, however those that need to resit both will not meet the entry requirements for this apprenticeship programme.
If you are required to resit either English or maths, you will be invited to undertake an initial assessment. If deemed suitable, you must be willing to achieve your level 2 English/maths qualification before the end of the apprenticeship programme as part of your study.
Are there any additional costs associated with the course?
Full uniform is needed for every college session. The price is to be confirmed but will be approximately £45.00. You will also require an apprenticeship kit, at a cost of approximately £180.00. Final costs will be provided upon enrolment.
