What is the course about?
Are you interested in working in the exciting hairdressing and media make-up sector? If you enjoy learning in a practical way and love being creative, this course is perfect for you! This qualification is designed to give you a taste of this growing industry and will allow you to take part in stimulating experiences that provide a springboard to the next level of study.
This course will suit you if you're just starting out or already have some knowledge and basic skills in the industry. If you are interested in working with people and would like to develop a useful set of skills that will allow you to train further and provide you with career and travel opportunities, then this is the course for you.

The sector boasts a workforce of over 245,000 people working across 55,000 businesses comprising of hair, beauty and nail salons, barbers, and spas. HABIA states the industry size and turnover annually in this sector is £6.2 billion, employing nearly a quarter of a million people. As one of the biggest growing industries in Cheshire currently, there are plenty of opportunities to earn big wages.
Learning on your course will take place in our state-of-the-art front-facing salon, The Academy, which has fully equipped professional hairdressing salons and media make-up studios. Being immersed in the salon environment and working on real paying clients will give the opportunity to put your newly developed skills to the test and receive live, honest critique. The open salon practical sessions will give you the opportunity to demonstrate your professionalism and develop a range of techniques for a variety of clients.
What will I learn?
This hands-on, work-based, course will provide you with all of the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to progress within the industry. You will be introduced to the hairdressing and media make-up sector and learn how to present a professional image in a salon. There will be a key focus on client consultation and how to promote products and services to clients in the salon environment, to prepare you for work in a real salon. You will also develop skills and knowledge within the art of photographic make-up, shaping and colouring eyebrows, body art design, applying make-up, themed face painting, and plaiting and twisting.
You will be expected to attend 100% of your course to provide the opportunity to develop industry related skills and prepare you for the workplace.
What will the course lead on to?
After successfully completing this course, you will have the skills and knowledge needed to progress on to the Level 3 Theatrical & Media Make-up course, which covers photographic make-up, anatomy and physiology, airbrush make-up, camouflage make-up, and special effects make-up. You will also be in a position to offer mobile hair and make-up treatments or begin work within a salon environment.
Are there any links with industry and university?
In order to enhance your learning and knowledge of the wider sector, you will have the opportunity to hear from guest speakers throughout your course, who will come in and talk about their specialist area or their working environment. Guest speakers have included a range of employers and manufacturers such as Kaeso, Peggy Sage and Wella. Our links with product companies will also provide you with a trade card, allowing you to build on your product repertoire for home use to build up your skills. We also have strong links with Steiner, a connection which will open your eyes to the exciting opportunity of working on cruise ships whilst travelling the world.
We will also support you in securing a two-week work placement in a relevant vocational setting, enabling you to gain a taste of a real-life working environment. This could even be your opportunity to impress and secure a part-time job or apprenticeship!
What support is available?
You will be allocated a progress coach who will provide you with support to help you succeed on your study programme and progress on to your chosen career or progression path. We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed. Additionally, eligible students can access a wide range of finance and funding support to help them during their time at college.

What are the entry requirements?
Minimum of four GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English and/or maths, or successful completion of a level 1 qualification. Students will be expected to continue to study towards a GCSE Grade 4 English and/or maths if not already achieved.
Are there any additional costs associated with the course?
You will be expected to purchase a uniform so that you can present professional standards from the very start of your course. You will be required to purchase a kit containing make-up, hair products, and equipment for use within your time on the course. Further details of uniform and kit will be available on application.
Various trips are organised throughout the academic year relating to the beauty industry, which you will be required to pay a contribution towards.
