What is the course about?

This exciting one-year course will give you the opportunity to gain an insight into the fast-paced world of computing. It will enable you to build on your existing knowledge, develop and enhance your technical skills, helping you to embark upon a career in this ever-changing sector.

Why should I choose the course?

You will be taught by a team of tutors who have a wealth of experience in the industry, all offering differing specialisms to enhance your learning. This means the course is taught to current industry standard and we keep up with latest trends and technologies. You will get to use high- spec Windows PCs and will become proficient at using programmes such as MS Access, Excel and a range of IDE's such as VS Code and PyCharm.

What will I learn?

You will cover a variety of exciting topics over the duration of your course including configuring technology systems, security protection & risk management, IT services solutions, exploring technologies and database techniques.

What will the course lead on to?

This course is an ideal steppingstone qualification to lead you on to the Level 3 ICT or a related computing course to improve your knowledge and skills. Alternatively, you can seek employment within the rapidly growing computing & IT industry. Whether you go into cyber security, IT engineering or even graphic design, you’re sure to find something to put your tech-savvy skills to the test. In this ever-growing world of technology there are abundant career opportunities- with so many choices available you can take your pick!

Are there any links with industry and university?

On this course, you will have the opportunity to learn from guest speakers such as the Business Development Manager at Siemens, along with software engineers and even app developers with current industry experience. Meeting these guest speakers will provide you with a great industry insight and inspire your next steps. To make sure that you are job ready when you finish the course, you will complete a week’s work experience with an employer of your choosing. Previous students have worked in IT security at local schools or even computer recycling charities, gaining an understanding of the inner workings of computer systems.

What support is available?

You will be allocated a progress coach who will provide you with support to help you succeed on your study programme and progress on to your chosen career or progression path. We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed.

Why should I choose to study the course at Warrington & Vale Royal College?

During your time at the college, you will have the opportunity to take part in activities that will enrich your time here alongside your course. Every year our IT students take a trip to the Gadget Show to learn about emerging technologies. Additionally, you will also have the opportunity to visit the Arcade Club in Bury to enhance the games platform module of the course.

What are the entry requirements?

Minimum of four GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English and/or maths, or successful completion of a level 1 qualification. Students will be expected to continue to study towards a GCSE Grade 4 English and/or maths if not already achieved.

Are there any additional costs associated with the course?

You will be encouraged to purchase external drives on which to save your work in order to enable you to work independently outside college
