What is the course about?

Protecting people from infection is an essential element of providing high-quality care, especially considering the capacity some potentially life-threatening infections have to spread within care environments. This qualification aims to help you understand the meaning and importance of infection control, causes of infections, the conditions in which they thrive, and the ways that they can be spread. The course will also cover methods used to prevent and control the spread of infection

Why should I choose the course?

Around 300,000 patients develop an infection in England each year whilst being treated by the NHS. Protecting people from infection is an essential part of providing care, especially as some life-threatening infections can quickly spread within care settings. Throughout this course, you will gain the skills you need to tackle the risk of infection in your workplace. This course covers the procedures and regulations surrounding infection control, as well as the importance of maintaining a clean environment. As of 2020 this course has been updated to include knowledge of Covid-19.

What will I learn?

You will cover a wide range of modules on infection control. These include:

  • Understanding the purpose and principles of infection control and the procedures
  • Understanding how regulations inform policy and practice
  • Understanding roles, responsibilities, principles, and processes in relation to cleaning, decontamination, and waste management
  • Understanding the role of risk assessments
  • The importance of maintaining a clean environment
  • The sterilisation process
  • How to safely handle laundry
  • How to safely handle sharps.
