What is the course about?
Are you interested in working in the exciting beauty therapy industry? Do you want to do something practical and hands on? This qualification is designed to give you a taste of this growing industry and will allow you to undertake stimulating experiences that provide a springboard to the next level of study. This course will suit you if you're just starting out in beauty therapy or already have some knowledge and basic skills in the industry. If you are interested in working with people and would like to develop a useful set of skills that will allow you to train further and provide you with career and travel opportunities, then this is the course for you.

The sector boasts a workforce of over 245,000 people working across 55,000 businesses comprising of hair, beauty and nail salons, barbers, and spas. HABIA states the industry size and turnover annually in this sector is £6.2 billion, employing nearly a quarter of a million people. As one of the biggest growing industries in Cheshire currently, there are plenty of opportunities to earn high wages.
Learning on your course will take place in our state-of-the-art salon, The Academy, which features fully equipped professional beauty therapy suites. Being immersed in this front-facing salon environment and working on real paying clients will give the opportunity to put your newly developed skills to the test and receive live, honest critique. The open salon practical sessions will give you the opportunity to demonstrate your professionalism and develop a range of beauty therapy techniques for a variety of skin types.
What will I learn?
This hands-on, work-based course will provide you with the skills, knowledge and experience needed to progress within the beauty therapy industry. You will be introduced to the beauty therapy sector and learn how to present a professional image in a salon. There will be a key focus on client consultation and how to promote products and services to clients in the salon environment, preparing you for employment in a real salon or as a mobile therapist.
You will also develop skills and knowledge within spray tanning, facials, manicure and pedicure, nail art, make-up, waxing, tinting, and shaping brows and lashes, anatomy and physiology, working in beauty related industries, health and safety practices within the salon, and salon reception duties.
What will the course lead on to?
After successfully completing this course, you will have the skills and knowledge needed to progress onto the Level 3 Beauty Therapy course, which covers facial and body electrical treatments, body massage, and epilation.
You will also be in a position to offer mobile beauty therapy treatments or begin work within a salon environment.
Are there any links with industry and university?
In order to enhance your learning and knowledge of the wider sector, you will have the opportunity to hear from guest speakers throughout your course, who will come in and talk about their specialist area or their working environment. Guest speakers have included a range of employers and manufacturers such as Kaeso, Environ, and Silhouette, as well as apprentices who have progressed with their career and opened their own businesses. Our links with product companies will also provide you with a trade card, allowing you to build on your product repertoire for home use to build up your skills. We also have strong links with Steiner, a connection which will open your eyes to the exciting opportunity of working in beauty therapy on cruise ships whilst travelling the world.
We will also support you in securing a two-week work placement in a relevant vocational setting, enabling you to gain a taste of a real-life working environment. This could even be your opportunity to impress and secure a part-time job or apprenticeship!
What support is available?
You will be allocated a progress coach who will provide you with support to help you succeed on your study programme and progress on to your chosen career or progression path. We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed. Additionally, eligible students can access a wide range of finance and funding support to help them during their time at college.

What are the entry requirements?
You will need a minimum of two GCSEs grade 3 or above and GCSE English and/or maths at grade 4 or above, or successful completion of a level 1 course in a relevant subject.
If you have a level 1 qualification and have not already achieved a grade 4 in your GCSE English and/or maths, you will be required to work towards achieving this as part of your study programme.
Are there any additional costs associated with the course?
You will be expected to purchase a uniform so that you can present professional standards from the very start of your course. There will be a kit list issued with beauty therapy products and equipment for use within your time on the course, which you will be required to purchase. Further details will be available on application.
Various trips are organised throughout the academic year relating to the beauty industry, which you will be required to pay a contribution towards.
