What is the course about?
The course will help you to understand how to prepare women’s hair for styling whilst also developing your technical language in English.
Why should I choose the course?
If you want to develop your speaking, listening, writing and reading skills whilst learning new skills or enhancing existing skills, this is the perfect opportunity to undertake a vocational qualification alongside your ESOL course, learn technical language used in the workplace, develop communication skills when communicating with clients, meet new people and expand your creativity.
What will I learn?
On this course you will learn how to:
- Follow health and safety in relation to working in a salon
- Perform basic techniques for styling women’s hair
- State the factors that influence the choice of hair-styling techniques for women
- State the importance of the preparation procedures for styling women’s hair
You will learn how to style a variety of hair types to a professional standard and the features and benefits of styling and finishing products to enhance a style.
What will the course lead on to?
You could progress onto a Level 1 Certificate Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector or other short courses that would support you to develop and enhance your skills across the hair & beauty sector.
Are there any links with industry and university?
In order to enhance your learning and knowledge of the wider sector, you will have the opportunity to hear from guest speakers throughout your course, who will come in and talk about their specialist area or their working environment. Past guest speakers have included a range of employers and manufacturers such as Wella, as well as previous students who have progressed with their career and opened their own businesses. We also have strong links with Steiner, a connection which will open your eyes to the exciting opportunity of working in hair or beauty on cruise ships whilst travelling the world.
We will also support you in securing a work placement in a relevant vocational setting, enabling you to gain a taste of a real-life working environment. This could even be your opportunity to impress and secure a part-time job.

We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed. Additionally, eligible students can access a wide range of finance and funding support to help them during their time at college.

What are the entry requirements?
You must be over 19 have a minimum of Entry 2 in English and have an interest in the subject area. You must be willing to participate in a variety of salon and classroom activities and complete some written work to develop your writing and reading skills.
