What is the course about?
This exciting introductory art and design course is aimed specifically at adults who have a passion for Art and Design. You will be encouraged to explore a variety of craft resources, by experimenting with different materials and techniques across a range of art and design discipline areas. These will include drawing, painting, printing, collage and mixed media. You will learn about different artists and how they generate ideas based around personally selected themes and you will use this to inform your own ideas. As the course progresses you will create, present and review your own artworks.
Location, days and times of course: The course will be delivered from our Winsford campus over two days as follows:
- Tuesdays 12.45pm-4pm
- Thursdays 8.45am-12pm
Why should I choose the course?
If you have an interest in art and design and would like to get a formally recognised qualification, then this course is perfect for you. We have an extremely well established art department at Warrington and Vale Royal College with highly experienced and specialised teaching staff. We welcome all learners to this course who have an interest in the subject and would like to learn more, in a friendly and welcoming learning environment.
What will I learn?
You will be introduced to a wide range of materials, processes and techniques including drawing techniques using pencil. Graphite, charcoal and pastels, watercolour and acrylic painting, a variety of printmaking techniques such as mono printing, lino printing and dry point printing. You will also explore collage and mixed media as techniques to further extend your creative practice. You will also be introduced to a variety of historical and more contemporary artists, which will help to inform and inspire your own work. Delivery is very workshop based, with regular demonstrations and one to one support.
What will the course lead on to?
Upon completion of this course, you can progress onto the Level 2 Certificate in Creative Craft - Art and Design to further your skills.
Are there any links with industry and university?
We regularly have guest speakers and practicing artists who deliver talks to our students. We also run a range of local and national trips to various galleries and museums. We work closely with external agencies and employers to develop ‘live briefs’ which allow our students to explore real life projects. Recent projects have allowed students to work with culture Warrington, Warrington Museum, Lion Salt Works, and Blakemere Craft Centre.
What support is available?
We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed. Additionally, eligible students can access a wide range of finance and funding support to help them during their time at college.

What are the entry requirements?
A portfolio of recent artwork is desirable but not essential. This portfolio could consist of a selection of artworks produced at home or whilst on an adult and community learning art course.

Are there any additional costs associated with the course?
We will be provided basic art materials required to complete this course. You will need to supply your own sketchbook for the course. We recommend a hard backed sketchbook at either A3 or A4 size. It is also desirable for you to build up your own basic art supplies for use when working from home, details to be provided during induction.
