What is the course about?
This unit will provide you with an introduction to autism, covering what is meant by ‘autism’, theories and diagnosis. You will also look at common misconceptions associated with autism and conditions that can co-occur with autism.
Why should I choose the course?
By completing the qualification, you will develop knowledge which would support progression to further qualifications and into relevant employment in the health and social care sector or early years sector.
You will be taught by qualified teachers who have experience working with children and adults in the health or early years sector.
What will I learn?
You will cover the following topics:
- Understanding Autism
- Theories associated with Autism
- Characteristics that may present in individuals with Autism
- Conditions that may co-occur in individuals with Autism
- Common misconceptions of Autism
Please note the delivery model of the course is as follows:
- 3 hours per week face to face
- 3 hours per week of home study
What will the course lead on to?
Through achieving this qualification, you will develop knowledge which would support progression to further qualifications and into relevant employment in the health and social care or education sectors.
You could progress to:
- Full Level 2 Certificate Understanding Autism
- Further health and social care qualifications

As part of the Health & Social Care Academy we have valuable industry links within the community and with universities. These links provide opportunities to go out on industry placement to further develop your skills should you choose to complete further qualifications with us.

We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed. Additionally, eligible students can access a wide range of finance and funding support to help them during their time at college.
