What is the course about?
Our Beginners Functional Skills courses focus on the skills needed in everyday work and life. They help develop practical maths skills and allow you to apply these to a range of everyday situations. At a pace that you the student, are comfortable with, our courses aim to build on your current proficiencies.
Why should I choose the course?
The course runs over the academic year and is 3 hours per week face to face.
We know that for some people the maths simply doesn't add up. We plan to take the fear out of maths for people who hate dealing with numbers. We've also given people the skills they need to gain confidence. From being able to check your change in a shop to helping your children with homework we know that these skills can be life-changing.
What will I learn?
Our Functional Skills qualifications are intended for anyone wishing to develop their maths. They focus on both the underpinning skills as well as the ability to apply maths to different contexts. The subject content is split into three areas: using numbers and the number system; using common measures, shape and space; and handling information and data / statistics. There is naturally much overlap between these sections and drawing on different areas will be encouraged.
What will the course lead on to?
On completion of this course, you may be able to progress onto a higher level Functional Skills qualification or a GCSE Maths course.
Are there any links with industry and university?
Achieving a Functional Skill qualification is recognised by most businesses and higher education establishments, this is a good stepping stone to achieve an even higher Maths qualification (always check with the provider as to the qualifications they require).

We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed. Additionally, eligible students can access a wide range of finance and funding support to help them during their time at college.
