What is the course about?
If you’d like to improve your English skills and boost your reading, writing and communication skills, this course is ideal for you. Perhaps you want to be able to help a friend or relative with their English work or gain the skills needed to progress on to a further, more technical English course. Whatever your intention, this course will equip you with the basic skills you need to get started.
Why should I choose the course?
A year long course designed to boost your confidence with the English language and help you progress onto further study. A gentle pace with some blended learning.
What will I learn?
This beginner level course will help you learn the basics of effective reading, writing, and verbal communication. If you’ve not studied English for a long period of time, or struggle with your reading and writing, this can be a perfect refresher course before you move on to more technical study. The course will introduce you to the basics of spelling, punctuation, and grammar whilst also supporting you to become a more confident reader and communicator. It could also be a stepping stone to our Level 1 English course, if appropriate. You could even go on to achieve your English GCSE.
There are 3 elements to achieving this qualification, reading, writing and speaking and listening assessment and all 3 must be completed to achieve the qualification, however assessments are conducted in a low key informal setting.
What will the course lead on to?
This beginner level course offers an ideal steppingstone to the Level 1 English course. When you are ready, you could progress on to resitting your English GCSE.
What support is available?
We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed. Additionally, eligible students can access a wide range of finance and funding support to help them during their time at college.

What are the entry requirements?
Whilst there are no academic entry requirements for this course, we recommend learners have a fairly good grasp of spoken English (this is not an ESOL course) but need to improve reading and writing skills. Perhaps English is not your first language and you are looking to start gaining FS qualifications, learn about spelling, punctuation and grammar and improve conversational English and literacy.
You will be required to attend an assessment session prior to enrolling onto the course to determine which level of English is most suitable
