What is the course about?

This course is designed for people who want to enter the construction industry. The course will develop your knowledge, skills and understanding of the construction industry. This includes problem solving, design, planning and building.

The programme can be studied full time in 1 year (attending 2 days per week) or part time over 2 years (attending 1 day per week).

Why should I choose the course?

Higher Nationals provide a wide-ranging study of the Construction sector and are designed for students who wish to pursue or advance their career in Construction. In addition to the knowledge, understanding and skills that underpin the study of the Construction sector, Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals in Construction give students experience of the breadth and depth of the sector that will prepare them for further study or training.

What will I learn?

The HNC consists of the following units:

Core units:

  • Individual Project (Pearson set)
  • Construction Technology
  • Construction Practice and Management

Specialist Units:

  • Legal and Statutory Responsibilities in Construction
  • Construction Information (drawing, detailing, specification)
  • Science & Materials

Optional Units*:

  • Tender and Procurement
  • Site Supervision and Operations

*Optional modules listed are indicative and may be subject to change, we do not guarantee that an optional unit will always run in any given academic year as options may be dependent on student choice, numbers and staff expertise.

You will be assessed through a variety of assessment methods. These include projects, portfolios, presentations, case studies, reports and research. The assessments are intended to provide maximum opportunities for you to demonstrate the links between theoretical knowledge and understanding and practice. The assessment process will be facilitated via consideration of work-based practical scenarios in addition to reference to your own work-related practical experience, where appropriate.

What will the course lead on to?

The Higher National Certificate provides a solid grounding in Construction, vendor accredited certification and Professional Body membership, upon which students can build; should they decide to continue their studies beyond the Certificate stage. You can progress on to a HND in construction or the first or second year of a related university degree course.

Are there any links with industry and university?

Typical student destinations include progression to The University of Salford & Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) to study either a BSc Hons in Quantity Surveying or BSc Hons in Construction Management. Students who have completed the programme have also managed to secure promotions with their current employer.

What support is available?

All HE students receive termly one-to-one tutorials with their programme leader to support them with their progress on programme. You will also have access to an online tutorial programme which provides guidance on a wide range of topics such as mental health, managing finances, support for single parents, and working online. In addition, you can access a programme of workshops throughout the year to support with topics such as study skills, academic writing, and time management.

We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if it is required, and a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support, and help when needed. All HE students have access to a designated progress coach who can also provide welfare support.
