What is the course about?
Bringing to life core subjects spanning electronics, mechanics and manufacturing, these courses will help you build the skills and knowledge you need for a career in this industry. Practical and experimental sessions give you a hands-on experience to complement your theoretical and mathematical learning.
Why should I choose the course?
This programme is for students who wish to pursue a career in Electrical/Electronic Engineering. It provides a grounding in general engineering. This is a theory based course with some practical work covering electrical/electronic and mechanical engineering.
What will I learn?
Our General Engineering courses cover a wide range of topics such as:
- Mechanical technology
- Digital and analogue electronics
- Engineering materials
- Science for Engineering
- Computer aided design (CAD) (level3 only)
- Electrical and electronic principles (level 3 only)
- Mathematics and further mathematics (level 3 only)
- Health and safety
You will be assessed through classroom studies, practical work, problem solving, communicating ideas, teamwork and assignment. There will also be continuous assessment of a portfolio containing evidence of completed assignments.
What will the course lead on to?
There is an abundance of opportunities available in the current UK Engineering sector. The industry has a vast skill shortage and there are a huge variety of jobs available for those interested in this career. You may wish to pursue a path as a Design Engineer, or perhaps you would prefer to get your hands dirty as a Mechanical Engineer. With a career in engineering there’s something for everyone.
You may also wish to progress onto a HNC or HND course in Engineering to further develop your knowledge and skills.
Are there any links with industry and university?
We regularly work with companies such as Roberts Bakery, Jungeheimrich, Vinchy and APG Precision to enhance your learning. You will be involved in workshops, demonstrations and guest talks from current leading industry professionals, to learn more about the industry and the options available to you. You will complete one week’s work experience for every year of your course. Previous students have worked with employers such as APG Precision, Dantom Electronics and Colass, and have impressed so much that they have gone on to secure jobs with these companies.
What support is available?
We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed. Additionally, eligible students can access a wide range of finance and funding support to help them during their time at college.

What are the entry requirements?
You will need to have 5 GCSEs grades A* - C, grades 9 - 4 or equivalent, including GCSE English Language. Preferably the GCSEs should include maths and Science.
Are there any additional costs associated with the course?
Students will need to provide their own stationery and calculator. A reading list will be provided and students will have access to our onsite library and e-learning facilities.
