What is the course about?
This qualification will provide you with the knowledge, integrity, competency, and proficiency required to perform sports massage on a range of clients to prevent and manage injuries and conditions. Successful achievement of this qualification will allow you to gain employment within an organisational setting or alternatively in a self-employed environment.
Why should I choose the course?
This in-depth course prepares you for industry and develops your sports massage techniques to a level 4 standard. By completing this course, you will gain high quality skills, knowledge, and behaviours which can be adapted to a variety of clients. The course runs over one evening each week for the full academic year and is designed to develop and embed your knowledge and techniques. Throughout the course you will gain hands on experience in a realistic environment, with open clinics taking place throughout the year.
What will I learn?
Throughout this qualification you will develop your knowledge and understanding of the theory underpinning the practice of sports massage therapy, including functional anatomy and physiology. You will develop and understand the effects and benefits of conducting subjective and objective assessments and treatment modalities to suit the client. You will develop an understanding of the advantages and disadvantages to cryotherapy and heat treatments. The course will also provide you with high quality skills and techniques to plan and prepare for a range of clients. You will apply a range of sports massage methods to help clients prevent and manage injuries. You will also develop skills to evaluate massage strategies and methods to inform on future practice.
In order to complete this qualification, you must achieve all three mandatory units:
- Conducting subjective and objective assessment
- Provide sports massage techniques to prevent and manage injury
- Treatment modalities to support soft tissue injury.
You will be assessed through a variety of methods including coursework, a portfolio of evidence, and practical assessments.
What will the course lead on to?
This qualification is focused on employing a range of methods to massage uninjured clients in sport and active leisure. Therefore, graduates of this programme will be equipped to work in an unsupervised capacity throughout the sport and active leisure industry. This qualification is recognised as an approved qualification for continued professional development (CPD) by the Sports Massage Association. It also provides progression opportunities to additional VTCT level 4 qualifications as well as progression onto a level 5 in sports massage.

What are the entry requirements?
To enter this course, you will need to have successfully completed the Level 3 Sports Massage Diploma. It is desirable but not essential that you have experience of working within the industry.
Are there any additional costs associated with the course?
A mandatory top is to be purchased and you may wish to purchase an optional jacket. Costs will be confirmed upon application.
