What is the course about?

If you would like to become a fully qualified bricklayer and work in a thriving industry, this course is ideal for you. The course builds on the skills you developed at level 2 and prepares you for a career as a professional bricklayer. The course will equip you with all the practical skills you need and provide you with a clear understanding of what makes a good tradesperson within the construction industry.

Why should I choose the course?

This course is ideal if you have an interest in the specialist trade of bricklaying and are looking to progress in the construction industry as a bricklayer. You will gain an industry recognised qualification from City & Guilds and study in our dedicated Colin Daniels Construction Centre, which houses well-equipped workshops containing a wide range of tools and materials. There’s never been a more exciting time to start a bricklaying career. There is a huge drive to build thousands of new homes each year throughout the UK, meaning your skills will be in very high demand once you qualify. This course will give you the essential skills you need to break into this thriving industry.

What will I learn?

This wide-ranging course will teach you the skills needed to progress in the building trade. You will learn advanced techniques such as repairing and maintaining masonry structures, constructing radial and battered brickwork, carrying out decorative and reinforced brickwork, constructing fireplaces and chimneys, and how to organise, plan and price up construction work. All of this is delivered in our specialist construction workshops, and you’ll also have access to well-appointed classrooms and computer facilities to enhance your learning and provide an effective link between the theoretical and practical aspects of the course. You will be assessed through a range of methods including practical assessments, job-related tests, and online computer-based exams.

What will the course lead on to?

After successfully completing this course, you will have the skills and knowledge to progress into employment as a highly skilled bricklayer, or you could look to pursue a higher level of study such as a HNC at university. The construction industry is thriving, and with hard work and relevant experience you could soon be working your way up the career ladder to become a construction site supervisor or even a surveyor. With a government target of 300,000 new homes to be built per year, the earning potential in this industry is incredible.

Are there any links with industry and university?

This course benefits from excellent employer links with a number of local and national companies such as Vinci Construction, David Wilson Homes, Persimmon Homes, Taylor Wimpey, and Cruden Construction. We invite these companies into the college to deliver fascinating guest lectures and demonstrations of new technology and equipment, enabling you to stay up to date and ahead of the game when you begin your career.

What support is available?

You will be allocated a progress coach who will provide you with support to help you succeed on your study programme and progress on to your chosen career or progression path. We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed. Additionally, eligible students can access a wide range of finance and funding support to help them during their time at college.
