Employer Incentives

Current Incentives for hiring a new apprentice

Employers will receive £3,000 for new employees of any age who start their apprenticeship from 1st April 2021 to 30th September 2021.

The incentive payment is in addition to the £1,000 employers already receive for hiring an apprentice:

• Aged 16 to 18 years old
• Under 25 with an education, health care plan or who has been in the care of their local authority

What you can use the payment for

The payment is different to apprenticeship levy funds, so you can spend it on anything to support your organisation’s costs. For example, on uniforms, your apprentice’s travel or their salary or tools etc. You do NOT need to pay this back.

Eligibility

You can only apply for new apprentices who joined your organisation between 1st April 2021 and 30th September 2021.
You cannot apply for an existing employee who joined your organisation before 1st April 2021, even if they started an apprenticeship after this date.

How to apply

You must set up a Digital Apprenticeship Service account which allows you to add apprentices, reserve funding and apply for employer incentives.

Please click here to set up your account.

Instructions to help you set up your account can be found here or contact the Apprenticeship Team on 01925 494271 who will guide you through the process.

Please Note: You must have your PAYE details and office reference number to set up your account. If you do not have these please contact the HMRC at: Register as an employer. Once received you will need to submit a payroll submission which can be blank and then wait 10 working days before you can proceed with setting up your account.

When you will get paid

The Government cannot make any payments until they have received and verified your organisation and finance details. This could take up to 3 months and they may contact someone from your organisation.
Any employer incentives will be paid in two instalments for each apprentice. The first 50% is paid after the apprentice completes 90 days and the second 50% payment is sent after 365 days.
Payments will be made by BACS on the 14th working day pf the month. It usually takes 3 working days to process. You can view applications, estimated payment dates, statuses of each payment on your Digital Apprenticeship Service account.
The additional £1,000 payment for hiring a 16-18 year old is also paid in two instalments at 90 and 365 days. Please note: it can take up to a month after the 90/365 days to receive payment.
