Distance learning is a great way to achieve desirable qualifications while studying at a time and pace that suits you. Most students over the age of 19 will be able to study these courses for free, however, please contact us if you are aged 19-23 and do not yet have a full Level 2 qualification (five GCSEs grade 9-4/ A*-C, NVQ Level 2 or higher) as additional eligibility criteria may apply.

Courses will take between 8 and 16 weeks to complete depending on the length and complexity of the award and number of guided learning hours.

Before you enrol

To ensure the distance learning programme is right for you, we have highlighted a few points for you to consider.

  • You will need access to a computer or laptop with internet access.
  • All the learning materials will be provided via an online platform.
  • You will be expected to meet set timescales for submitting work and will need to manage your time effectively alongside any other commitments you may have.
  • Your funded course will need to be completed within the timescale given, failure to complete the course as agreed will/may result in a £100 non-completion fee.

Level 2 Understanding Domestic Abuse

The annual Crime Survey estimates that almost 2.5 million adults experience domestic abuse each year. In addition, one in five children witness or experience domestic abuse in their childhood. Although it is often an under reported crime, with most cases of domestic abuse kept hidden. The new Domestic Abuse Act 2021 makes prosecuting domestic abuse more straightforward, and offers more protection to those who are being abused, but cases still need to be identified and responses need to be effective. This qualification is for anyone who has a responsibility to respond to domestic abuse or support those experiencing domestic abuse. This includes employers, teachers, health and social care workers and anyone involved in safeguarding vulnerable adults or young people.

There are 4 units in this qualification, which include understanding domestic abuse, the signs and risk factors associated with domestic abuse, the impact of domestic abuse and understanding policy, response, and intervention in relation to domestic abuse

Level 2 – Mental Health First Aid & Mental Health Advocacy in the Workplace

It’s important that employers are transparent and open about mental health issues, and this qualification builds an understanding of mental health problems and the support available to colleagues. Increasing the understanding of mental health of staff at all levels builds a culture of care and support. The purpose of this qualification is to give learners the skills to support colleagues with mental health problems. These skills will be gained by increasing the learner’s knowledge and understanding of mental health conditions and the principles of mental health first aid and how this can be implemented in the workplace. There is one unit in this qualification.

Level 2 – Certificate in Understanding Personal Care Needs

As we see an increasingly ageing population, the number of adults needing around-the-clock care is on the rise. As well as the need for medical care, there is also a need for high levels of personal care to allow those who need support to live as comfortably as possible. This qualification focuses on developing a person-centred approach to delivering high levels of personal care. There are 6 units in this qualification, which includes content on supporting personal hygiene, understanding foot care for individuals, how to support individuals to maintain oral health, pressure area care and understanding sepsis.

Level 2 – Certificate in Understanding Behaviour that Challenges

This qualification is designed to increase learners’ awareness and understanding of behaviour that challenges and its effects. There are 4 units in this qualification. By completing the qualification, learners will develop in-depth knowledge of behaviour that challenges which could support progression onto other appropriate qualifications and into relevant employment in the health and social care sector. It is useful to learners working in education and healthcare settings.

Level 2 – Certificate in Understanding Safeguarding and Prevent

This qualification is designed to increase learners’ awareness and understanding of the Prevent duty which was developed to help reduce the threat of terrorism in the UK. The course explores what radicalisation, extremism and terrorism are and how radicalisation can be reduced. The course has 4 units and explores safeguarding, including the roles of different agencies and instances of serious failures to protect the vulnerable. You will learn about inappropriate and illegal activity in relation to radicalisation and safeguarding.

Level 2 – Certificate in Falls Prevention Awareness

This qualification is designed to increase learners’ awareness of the risks of falling as we age and the reasons behind this. There are 4 units in this qualification and you will learn how to assess, monitor and review an individual’s risk of falling and look at the range of interventions that can reduce the risk of falls.

Level 2 – Certificate in Common Health Conditions

This qualification will ensure learners develop awareness of the signs, symptoms and treatments available for a variety of common health conditions, including cardiovascular disease, arthritis and physical disability. Learners will also discover how to care for individuals and enable them to manage, monitor and control their condition. There are 6 units in this qualification.

Level 2 – Certificate in Nutrition & Health

This qualification is ideal for a wide range of students who are interested in improving their understanding of nutrition and healthy eating. It will be particularly relevant for those working, or intending to work, in settings such as sport and recreation, exercise and fitness, hospitality and catering or health care, providing specific skills and knowledge to support their role in the workplace.

There are 6 units in this qualification, which aims to increase understanding of the principles of healthy eating and the role of food in maintaining health, increase confidence in planning and achieving a healthy diet, provide an understanding of food labelling, provide information on eating disorders, increase understanding of the role of a healthy diet for weight management and increase understanding of the principles of food safety in a home environment.

Level 2 – Certificate in Improving Personal Exercise, Health & Nutrition

This qualification is designed for learners who wish to develop knowledge and understanding of how to improve their own personal exercise, health and nutrition. Learners will gain an understanding of the impact of diet, nutrition and exercise on their personal health. They will also learn about safe and appropriate exercise and the importance of personal motivation and setting goals and targets. There are 4 units in this qualification.

Level 2 – Certificate in Principles of Working with Individuals with Learning Disabilities

This qualification is designed for learners with an interest in, or who are already working with, individuals with learning disabilities in a variety of roles. There are 6 units in this qualification.

This course aims to give learners knowledge and understanding to work with individuals with learning disabilities or difficulties and will explore the principles of safeguarding and positive risk taking and gain awareness of the autistic spectrum and is primarily for those within healthcare and social care, but may also be useful to those working in education or housing support roles.

Level 2 – Certificate in Understanding Autism

The Certificate in Understanding Autism develops knowledge and awareness of Autism. Autism is a spectrum condition that affects how a person communicates with others and how they interpret the world around them. Having a clear understanding of the misconceptions, diagnoses and support surrounding autism are just some of the essential skills needed when working in mental health and will be developed in the 6 units within this qualification.

Level 2 – Certificate in Dementia Care

This course will ensure learners develop and gain essential knowledge about supporting people with dementia in 6 units. The course includes providing an understanding of dementia and the different forms that it can take. It also focuses on the benefits of positive communication, use of medication and the importance of person- centred care.

Level 2 – Certificate in Understanding the Care and Management of Diabetes

By completing this qualification, learners will also improve and develop their knowledge and understanding to help provide the best care possible for people who are living with diabetes. Learners will also develop awareness of how the onset of Type 2 diabetes can be delayed with lifestyle changes. There are 4 units in this qualification.

Level 2 – Certificate in Awareness of Mental Health Problems

This is an extensive qualification which aims to raise learners’ awareness of not only mental ill-health, but also the steps that can be taken to protect mental well-being. Mental distress takes many forms and the course explores twelve different mental health conditions (12 units). These include: depression; bipolar disorder; stress and anxiety; phobias; obsessive compulsive disorder; post-traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia; eating disorders and dementia.

Level 2 – Certificate in Understanding Dignity and Safeguarding

This qualification aims to give learners knowledge and understanding of the key principles of dignity, duty of care and safeguarding as applied to adult health and social care. Learners will investigate the principles and how they are applied in everyday work contexts in the 4 units within the award.

Level 2 – Certificate in Safe Handling of Medication Certificate

The Understanding the Safe Handling of Medicines distance learning programme has been written for everyone who is involved in the care sector and is aimed to give all staff, supervisors and managers the essential knowledge needed to offer the very best professional approach to the managing and safe handling of medicines. It would be useful for individuals involved in medication administration in educational establishments. There are 4 units in this qualification.

Level 2 – Certificate in Principles of Care Planning

Care planning is about addressing an individual’s full range of needs whilst accounting for their circumstances and preferences. It helps individuals to be involved in decisions about their care and to achieve the outcomes they want. This 4-unit qualification will help learners to understand their role in supporting the preferences and needs of individuals in relation to their care or support, the development and implementation of care plans and contributing to the review of these by observing, monitoring and reporting on the care activities they’re responsible for.

Level 2 – Certificate in Customer Service for Health & Social Care Settings

This 4-unit qualification can help learners develop an awareness of customer service in health and social care, understand how to communicate effectively the setting, explore the needs of customers who access health and social care services and working with others in health and social care settings.

Level 2 – Certificate in Principles of End of Life Care

This 6-unit qualification is designed to provide learners with a broad understanding of end of life and palliative care, enabling them to provide sensitive and appropriate support to people nearing the end of life and their families. The course aims to develop the learner’s knowledge and understanding of: the different perspectives on death and dying; the aims of end of life care; the principles of person-centred care planning; the support needed to manage pain and discomfort; how dementia impacts on an individual’s end of life care; the role of the health and social care worker at the time of death, and how to appropriately support the bereaved.

Level 2 – Certificate in Principles of Prevention and Control of Infection in Health Care Settings

Protecting people from infection is an essential element of providing high quality care, especially considering the capacity some potentially life-threatening infections have to spread within care environments and is especially relevant in the current climate of Coronavirus. There are 4 units in this qualification and it aims to help learners to understand the meaning and importance of infection control, causes of infections, the conditions in which they thrive and the ways that they can be spread methods used to prevent and control the spread of infection.

Level 2 – Certificate in Counselling Skills

The qualification would be useful for anyone who would like to develop their use of counselling skills for use in either work or in a personal capacity. Learners may wish to progress towards further qualifications or study this programme in order to complement other programmes in health and social care; children’s care, learning and development; voluntary and community work.
This 4-unit qualification aims to introduce learners to the use of counselling skills in everyday life and work and some of the approaches that underpin the use of these skills. The qualification also focuses on the different approaches involved in the use of counselling skills and discusses the importance of self-development

Level 2 – Understanding Cancer Support

This qualification is designed for learners who want to increase their knowledge and understanding of supporting adults living with cancer. It could be used as a continuous professional development qualification for learners already working within the health care and social care sectors or for individuals providing informal care. The 4-unit award provides awareness of cancer, diagnosis and treatments for cancer, care & support options and end of life and bereavement care.

Level 2 – Certificate in Understanding Working with People with Mental Health Needs

You will study the Role of the Mental Health Worker, Mental Health and Mental Health Issues, Understand Duty of Care in Adult Health and Social Care, Approaches to Care and Management in Mental Health and Understanding Change and Support in Relation to Mental Health.

You will achieve a nationally recognised Level 2 qualification, gain skills and understanding to improve the experiences of service users, create better preventative care by identifying mental health and mental health issues by completing the 4 units in this award.

Level 1 – Certificate in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care

This qualification develops a basic knowledge of the adult social care sector. It covers the type of job roles and services within it, the role of communication and the importance of valuing the individuals being cared for and is suitable for anyone who is thinking about a career in adult health and social care. There are 2 units which introduce the learner to the principles of the adult care sector and the skills and attitudes needed to work in the sector.

Level 2 – Certificate in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care

This course builds on the Level 1 and is beneficial for those who are new to the adult social care field or for those who are considering working in this area. You will learn about the basic concepts of caring and preparation for employment in the sector and it would complement induction. There are 9 units which include understanding the role of the social care worker, principles of personal development, person-centred approaches, principles of diversity, equality and inclusion, principles of communication, safeguarding and protection, implementing our duty of care, how to handle information and understanding health and safety.

Level 2 – Certificate in Understanding Children and Young Peoples Mental Health

This qualification is designed to increase learners’ awareness and understanding of mental health in children and young people and factors affecting this at different stages of development. You will learn about the behaviours that may indicate concerns or conditions and explore the support that is available to children and young people, including services and treatments. There are 5 units in this qualification.

Level 2 – Understanding Adverse Childhood Experiences

This qualification will provide learners with an opportunity to develop an understanding of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) relevant to their current or future roles and will equip them with basic understanding of techniques for preventing and addressing adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in practice. There are 3 units in this qualification and it is designed for learners wishing to progress to a wide range of further learning and job roles such as nursery staff, teachers, health/social workers across health and social care, children and young people, nursing, public services and education and training.

Level 2 – Certificate in Introducing Caring for Children and Young People

This qualification is designed to increase learners’ awareness of caring for children and young people. It introduces stages of children’s development and explores how children learn at varying rates and in differing sequences. The course will describe the responsibilities of carers to ensure children are nurtured in a safe, secure environment that needs their individual care needs. You will also explore the value of play and the importance of this for development. There are 5 units in this qualification.

Level 2 – Certificate in Understanding Common Childhood Illnesses

The purpose of this qualification is to increase learners’ knowledge and understanding of common childhood illnesses to enable them to support the development and well-being of infants and children they support/care for. You will further your personal and professional development, whilst gaining an understanding of risk factors which may affect children and young people. You will be able to understand how to provide a safe and healthy environment for babies and young children, understand common childhood illnesses and understand health emergencies and specific health conditions in an early-years setting. This qualification has 4 units.

Level 2 – Certificate in Understanding Specific Learning Difficulties

This course will help develop your knowledge of specific learning difficulties and how these affect individuals. You will also understand how people are diagnosed and how they can be supported. This is suitable for anyone working within education, healthcare and social care. The qualification is 5 units and focuses on dyslexia and other hidden disabilities.

How am I assessed?

  • You will be assessed online through a series of short answer questions, with no formal exams and learn through self-study from the workbooks provided
  • You will complete the course using an interactive online learning platform.
