What is the course about?
Are you a practical learner who would love to progress in a thriving trade? If so, the Level 1 Electrical Installation course will give you the key knowledge and skills to begin your career in the industry. You will study in fully kitted-out workshops with the latest technology and equipment to ensure you are up to date with the current industry.
Why should I choose the course?
The electrical installation industry is currently thriving, with opportunities to earn high salaries and even travel abroad. With electricians generally earning the most out of all the trades, this is a very lucrative field to enter. As your career progresses, you could move into design engineering, project management, consultancy work, or training. You could even set up your own business and become your own boss! This level is ideal if you are just starting out and need a basic understanding of the electrical installation industry.
What will I learn?
This one-year course will allow you to develop craft and hand-skills to prepare for a career in the electrical installation industry. As well as studying the underpinning theory and principles of electrical science, you will carry out a multitude of practical training tasks such as the installation of cables and accessories for lighting circuits, as well as electrical power sockets/circuits. You will study a range of topics such as fundamental safe working practices, environmental and sustainability measures in domestic dwellings, electrical installation wiring and termination, fabrication techniques for electrical installation, electrical science and technology, site preparation for working in the construction industry, wiring and testing, and the structure of the construction industry.
*Irrespective of your GCSE results, all students will start at level 1 and learn basic skills before progressing through the course levels.
What will the course lead on to?
After successfully completing this course, you will have the skills and knowledge needed to progress onto the Level 2 Electrical Installation course, which can lead to opportunities to study at university or take an apprenticeship to earn while you learn. You could also take an alternative route to progress into electrical and electronic engineering. After progressing through the levels of study, many students on this course have progressed onto specialisms within the sector, including alarm and emergency systems, renewable energy installation, building services, highway lighting, and communications and IT.
Are there any links with industry and university?
Working with employers is a key component of this course and will help prepare you for your next step. You will compete in competitions as well as taking part in regular site visits, with employers observing your work so you can show off your skills. We work with employers such as Napit, Crabtree, IET, and Aico Ltd, to ensure that your knowledge is up to date with current industry standards.
You will also have the opportunity to undertake work placements, which could lead to amazing opportunities. All students will complete a one-week work placement for every year of their course. Many of our previous students have gone above and beyond to complete additional voluntary work. This has even led to past level 1 students securing apprenticeship and part-time work opportunities.
What support is available?
You will be allocated a progress coach who will provide you with support to help you succeed on your study programme and progress on to your chosen career or progression path. We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed.

At Warrington & Vale Royal College we are proud of our students’ abilities, so your skills will be showcased on the competition stage in annual competitions. Companies, suppliers, and employers are invited into the college during these competitions, to observe you working. Through impressing at these events and connecting with employers, many students have landed apprenticeship and part-time job opportunities.
You will also have the opportunity to take part in educational trips throughout the year, visiting places such as hydroelectric power plants and manufacturers. This will help you gain an understanding in the inner workings of the industry and get a taste of employment in the sector.
What are the entry requirements?
You will need a minimum of four GCSEs at grade 2 or above. If you have not already achieved a grade 4 in your GCSE English and/or maths, you will be required to work towards a functional skills qualification or a GCSE in English and/or maths as part of your study programme.
Irrespective of your GCSE results, most students will start at level 1 and learn basic skills before progressing through the levels.
Are there any additional costs associated with the course?
You will need steel toecap footwear for practical workshop activities, as well as a college uniform. You may also need to purchase industry standard textbooks and other equipment. Additional costs are charged to cover visits.
