As part of your course you will get to visit a variety of local and national companies, such as Vinci Construction and Metsa Construction.
We also have an annual trip to UK Construction Week, the UK’s largest built environment event, held at the NEC in Birmingham.
Courses include interesting trips to help expand your knowledge. For instance, on your level 1 course you will visit Aico Ltd’s training centre, and boost your skills with gas detection and fire alarm training. After completing your level 3 course you have the chance to do additional training and become a qualified gas detector, alarm fitter and official Aico Ltd installer.
You will also visit coal-fired, nuclear and hydroelectric power stations to enhance your knowledge of this varied industry.
The course includes several educational trips to enhance your learning. Previous trips have taken students to the Albert Dock, Yorkshire Copper and Electric Mountain. You will also visit trade wholesalers to gain an understanding of how to select and order equipment.
The college has close links with successful local and national employers, such as Vinci Construction, David Wilson Homes, Persimmon Homes, Taylor Wimpey and Lane End. Through these connections we arrange productive work placements for you and help you access top quality apprenticeship opportunities. Work placements are an important part of your studies, because they help you build up plenty of ‘real world’ practical experience.
Previous students have taken part in exciting projects such as Vinci Construction’s £69 million Warrington Time Square re-development, and the restoration of All Saints Church – a huge conservation project funded by the National Lottery. Industry experts such as Forterra Brick Manufacturers, MKM Building Supplies and OX Tools often visit the college to deliver guest talks and demonstrations. Regularly meeting these experts gives you a real insight into the latest industry developments.
Carpentry & Joinery
The college has close links with a number of organisations where you can complete work placements – a really great way to develop your practical skills and experience working in construction. Some of our previous students on placements have really impressed these companies and been offered jobs and even apprenticeships.
If you like, you also have the chance to prove your skills in competitions. Some of our students have won medals in
the National SkillBuild Competition, which is the biggest multi-trade competition in the UK for trainees.
During your course you will regularly meet with industry experts, giving you the opportunity to learn from their knowledge and experience. Industry-leading power tool manufacturers also provide unique course-related demonstrations to help further your learning.
The college has close links with top employers such as Schneider Electric, Napit, Crabtree, IET and Aico Ltd. These connections mean you enjoy valuable work placement and apprenticeship opportunities. You will complete a week’s worth of placement for every year of your course, and this is a brilliant way to get your industry knowledge and working experience up-to-date. Many of our students complete additional voluntary placements too, to really stand out in the jobs market.
Industry experts regularly come into college to share their knowledge and experience. Paul Meenan, a leading industry professional who works with E5 and Network Rail, delivers valuable demonstrations and presentations to students. Such guest talks mean you get really useful insights into the latest industry developments.
The college works with a lot of local and national trades companies such as Aquila Plumbing, H20 and Ocean Bathrooms. You will hear from leading industry professionals to enhance your skills and prepare you for working life in this field. As well as inviting a range of industry experts to deliver talks on career progression, we also invite tool manufacturers to present the latest tools, ensuring that our students are kept up-to-date with the latest equipment. Companies include Screwfix, MKM, Monument Tools and Nerrad Tools.
Our Warrington campus is the hub for the new Advanced Construction Training (ACT) project, funded by the Cheshire and Warrington Local Enterprise Partnership’s ‘Digital Skills in Construction’ project.
ACT will stimulate digital innovation in the construction industry and will train and upskill the workforce to build homes, workplaces and infrastructure for Cheshire and Warrington. With a strategic focus on digital skills alongside traditional construction methods, ACT will help meet the construction industry’s need to increase the number of apprenticeship starts.
The project will be centred on developing BIM, Solid Works, Auto CAD, Tekla and other digitised systems for application in the construction, nuclear and allied industries. ACT will also help satisfy the pressing need for digitally-skilled structural engineers and surveyors in large companies.
