ESOL

Our ESOL courses are suitable for students whose first language is not English. Perhaps you are a complete beginner or already have a basic knowledge of the language. If you have moved to the UK from overseas, are seeking asylum, or are classified as a refugee, you may be referred for this course from the local council or other institutions. The course covers several levels of competence in English, from complete beginners up to GCSE-equivalent level.

Trips and visits

As this is a part-time adult course, trips and visits are generally not applicable.

Our ESOL course is suitable for adults who are looking to learn English or build up their skills. Covering reading, writing, speaking and listening, this ESOL course will develop your knowledge and help you feel more confident when communicating in English. Whether you are taking the course for personal use or to boost your employability, you will be equipped with the valuable skills you need to achieve your goals.

Petya Delcheva, who is originally from Bulgaria, is currently studying our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) course. Petya chose to study ESOL to improve her skills, and is really enjoying the course. Tomas Jaksiboga decided to study English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) to boost his language skills and expand his vocabulary.

Tomas, who is originally from Lithuania, says the best thing about the course is the opportunity to meet a wide range of people. In the future, Tomas would like to study an IT course at the college and eventually progress on to university.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) student Panagiota Gavriil came to England after she retired and felt it was important to speak the language as fluently as possible.

Panagiota, who comes from Greece, loves her course and thinks very highly of her tutor.

Jurate Macenskiene is studying English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) to improve her English, with a view to enrolling on to a HR course at the college and securing a career in this field.

Meet our tutors

Louise Gresty1

Louise Gresty

Louise Gresty, Subject Leader for ESOL, has been teaching at the college for over 20 years. She switched from teaching literacy to teaching ESOL 17 years ago and has since taught all levels of ESOL from pre-entry to level 3, across a wide variety of courses and qualifications.

Louise has achieved a BA (Hons) English and Philosophy from the University of Leeds as well as a PGCE from Edge Hill University and an MA TESOL from the University of Manchester.

Louise loves how rewarding her job is, saying: "I love the way that the job allows me to meet so many diverse and interesting people. Learning English really helps them to get on in their lives and it is fantastic to see the increase in their skills and confidence. Teaching ESOL never gets boring and I feel that I make a positive difference."
