Further Education Learner Support Fund (Non-repayable bursary)

You may be able to access a wide range of finance and funding support to help you during your time at college.

If you are aged 19 or over and either your household income is below £31,000*, or you currently live with parents who support you whilst you are in education you may be eligible to receive support from the college bursary funds. Household income refers to the total gross taxable income of the household. If you are aged over 19 and live with parents, we will not take their income into account, just any income or benefits which are paid to you.

The fund could support you with the cost of:

  • Childcare (although if you are aged under 20 at the start of your course you must apply directly to Care to Learn)
  • Travel costs (including contribution towards petrol costs or a bus pass)
  • Childcare (including after school clubs)
  • Kit/uniform/equipment or course materials
  • Educational visits
  • DBS check
  • Getting to university interviews.
  • Contribution towards tuition fees

Advanced Learner Loan (Level 3 or above)

If you are aged 19 or over on the first day of your course and would like to study a level 3 qualification or above, you may be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to help cover the cost of your course.

The minimum loan amount you can receive is £300. You can borrow the maximum loan amount or part of the course cost if you would prefer to pay for the rest yourself.

You can apply for a maximum of 4 loans. However, once you have received an Advanced Learner Loan, you will not be able to take out another loan to do the same type of course at the same level.

This type of loan does not depend on your household income and there is no credit check.

How to apply: 

Once you have been offered a place on the course, we will send you a learning information & funding letter.

You can then apply online at

To apply, you will need a National Insurance Number and Valid ID (passport or birth certificate).


You will not have to pay anything back until you have finished the course and are earning over £27,295. Once you are earning over this amount, you will only pay back 9% of your earnings above this figure and the repayments will be deducted from your salary.

If you stop working, your repayments will stop until your income is more than £27,295.

Any loans that remain after 30 years will be written off.

Did you know?
If you take out an Advanced Learner Loan to study an Access to HE course, you will not have to pay it back if you go on to complete a Higher Education course.

You may be eligible for fee remission if you meet a specific funding criteria or are in receipt of the benefits listed below:

  • You are aged 19 – 23 and do not already have a full level 2 or level 3 qualification
  • You are 24 and over and do not already have a level 3 qualification, such as A levels, an advanced technical diploma, or equivalent
  • Job Seeker’s Allowance (including National Insurance Credits only)
  • Employment Support Allowance (Work Related Activities Group)
  • Universal Credit: take-home pay as recorded on Universal Credit statement (disregarding benefits) is less than £345 a month for a sole adult, or £552 a month for a joint benefit claim.

Do you earn less than £17,374.50 a year? Your course could be free!

Please note, the if you live in a Liverpool City Region postcode, your course may be free or co-funded by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority’s Adult Education Budget. Threshold of £19,305 applies in this area.
